Range Report: Ruger P95C (9 mm)

Tuesday, November 11th, 2003 | Guns |

rugerkp95d.gifIn a recent review of the Ruger P90, Massad Ayoob mentioned something astonishing. Clay Harvey studied .45s and wrote a book, Everything You Really Need to Know About Choosing a .45 Automatic for Self-Defense. After shooting a large number of guns and looking at repair rates, he declared the P90 his “first choice for an all-purpose defensive pistol.”

The P90 series is available in 9 mm, .40 S&W and .45 calibers. I shot a 9 mm P95.

The ambidextrious magazine release is the best I’ve ever used. I could easily reach it with my thumb or index finger. With conventional designs your finger pushes the button inwards. With the P95 your finger rocks the button forward, which I found more natural. If equipped with an ambi slide release, I think I could reach it from either side, too.

Ruger P95
Capacity 10+1
Weight Empty 27 oz.
Barrel 4.5″
Length 7.25″
Origin USA

Some of the Rugers use an alloy receiver. The receiver on the P95 and P97 models is made from a polymer. It’s reminiscent of the Ruger 10/22. The handle is slightly blocky, but comfortable, with molded-in grips. The P95 and P97 versions are about $50 cheaper and five ounces lighter than the alloy receiver models.

The white dot sights are pretty good. Bigger or brighter dots would have helped.

All of the Ruger centerfire service pistols are double action. You have your choice of a manual safety, a decocker, or a double action only (DAO) trigger pull. (The picture accompanying this article shows the DAO model.) The double action trigger pull is somewhat long and heavy, but better than most DA triggers.

At $350 real world price for a centerfire autoloader, it would be hard to beat the Rugers, particularly with their reputation for reliability.

Too bad the DA trigger pull blows.

One cool thing about the Ruger, though. You can get the version with a manual safety and use it cocked and locked.

A “Ruger P95C.” Good. Now I have something quasi-knowledgeable to say on the topic of handguns. :)

Is that pronounced “pee nine five cee?”

Or “pee ninety-five cee?”

My father bought me a stainless P94 almost ten years ago. It is the very best of the Ruger P series in my opinion, but the grips sucked and a Hogue or Pachmayr upgrade is needed.

I put 5650 rounds through that weapon before I replaced the barrel and sold it.

Well, I guess that we can thank Bill Ruger, the great antigunner that he became shortly before he died and went to hell for this poorly opperating pistol so many affectionately know as the subway massacre special.

I have had my ruger P95DC for 3 years. I have owned many other auto-loaders, from a Jennings to a Para. The P95 is by far one of the best pistols I have ever owned. Accurate, and even after 3000 rounds, I have not one had a single jam or stoppage. I can say that for any other pistol I have owned. It is great!!

Charles, what are you blathering about? You are the first I have ever heard call a P95 “poorly opperating” [sic].
-I bought one of the first ones and have fired a couple of thousand rounds, without a single stoppage.
-I’ve seen a brand-new Beretta FS92 and Glock 17 misfeed the first time people took them to the range, until several dozen rounds were fired to break them in.
-In the December 1990 issue of Guns Magazine, Massad Ayoob stated “Also in common with the Glock is a high order of ruggedness. We ran over a P95 deliberately with a Jeep Grand Cherokee, picked it up, and shot it without a malfunction. It “took a lickin’ and kept on tickin’”.”
-”The new Ruger P95 was created through one of the most extensive development programs in company histoy. The entire product was developed and refined until it successfully fired 20,000 rounds ofthe +P+ 9mm ammunition, without any significant deterioration or loss of performance. The pistol showed little or no wear, and was firing 31/2 inch groups at 25 yards from a machine rest following the test.” (http://www.firinglineinc.com/html/body_d2m4pis.html)
-”subway massacre special”? what in the world is that? I have never heard any gun called that, and neither has Yahoo or Google (except for your post here). Are you referring to bernard Goetz, the “Subway Vigilante”? He used a five shot .38 caliber Smith and Wesson revolver, several years before the P95 was introduced.

That guy was talking about the Long Island railroad shooting many years ago.The killer used a p 89 pistol. But such a comment shows an ingnorant person.I guess He believes that Mr Ruger made a mistake with His ten round magazine proposal.

I’ve tried to justify using other handguns, and my department issues Glocks. I’ve never had a problem with either my P94 or P89. Funny thing is that twice while performing requalifications, 2 different Glocks I was using had mechanical problems. Does that make me nervous? Sure, I lost some trust in the Glocks and wish the department would allow us to choose our weapon to keep us safe.

I’ve researched other brands, studied tests and talked to many officers. Many speak negatively about other weapons, I couldn’t find anyone who said anything bad about their Ruger. The main issue seemed to be that the price caused them to question whether the quality will be there. But after a period of time, and lack of problems, they became believers.

The most telling observation, to me, is that the officers I know who carried Rugers, when the department began issuing Glocks - did not give up the Rugers. Officers sold HK’S, Sigs and others. For some reason they just wouldn’t give up their Rugers.

If you want target quality, spend $1500. If you want a gun you can trust to perform, buy a Ruger.

i bought a p95 after bout 200 rounds my gun started jamming…when i use the cheapest ammo i canfind i dont have a real problem. when i use the mid grade ammo it really jams up bad…
although it has jammed it is a very comfortable gun to carry, fire, and handle.
just wondering if anyone has the same issuses as i do..

Bill, why don’t you just send it back to ruger? I think you can send them 9 dollars or something and they will look at it, and replace anything that is needed. They are excellent in customer service.

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A P 944T .40 S&W AND I AM EXPERIENCING FEEDING FAILURES WITH WINCHESTER 180 GR. JHP’S. THE GUN HAS ONLY HAD ABOUT 100 RDS. FIRED.SHOULD I EXPECT THIS TO RESOLVE ITSELF WITH A LONGER BREAK-IN? IT ALSO SEEMS TO HAVE ALOT OF TRIGGER CREEP, EVEN SA. I OWN A P 90 .45 AUTO AND LOVE IT! ANY THOUGHTS?

John, you might consider using 100-200 rounds of FMJ ammo to see how it feeds in your P944. I always use FMJ ammo during the “breaking-in” period. Wolf, CCI/Blazer(aluminum), and Fiocchi seem to work well.

I recently purchased a p95dc ruger decock pistol, and although i love the gun i worry about its lack of power. This is my first gun however so i was wondering what model i should get that has more stopping power. I also want to keep it in the ruger family since the rugged reliabilty of the p95 (over 5000 rounds fired flawlessly) has made me a believer. I was thinking about the p97 decock as my next purchase…

My 1st duty weapon was a P89. Excellent weapon. My 2nd duty weapon was a P97D. Another excellent weapon (although i’m a limp wrister and the .45 is a little heavy for me…). My current duty weapont is a Glock 22C, good weapon however nowhere near as good of a trigger or as accurate as my rugers. My duty weapon for my part time gig is my P95D. I would take my Rugers into combat anyday, no questions asked.

I have owned my p95 9mm for 6 months now. It is my first ruger, and at $308, I too was worried about quality. Not anymore. After about 1000 rounds, I still have yet to have a problem. Concealability really isnt an issue either. I use an Uncle Mikes inside the pants holster and it works nicely. Thanks to Tim for the advice about the Hogue grips. I will try some.

I bought a KP944 two months ago and I am rather pleased with its performance. I have experienced about 4-5 jams when it is trying to feed the ammo into the barrel resulting in an open slide with the cartridge stuck between the magazine and barrel opening. I usually just have to pull the slide back slightly and push the bullet down and let it fall out of the breach. I have fired nearly 200 rounds of CCI blazer ammo since I bought it using the .40 S&W FMJ 155 gr. load. Will this problem self resolve with more break in time or is this a problem I need to worry about. Otherwise I love this gun and would like to feel comfortable using this firearm on duty. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks.

I recently purchased a new in box P90, and a few times it has jammed after the initial round, and i had to disassemble it to relieve the jam. it has an aluminum guide rod, and after maybe 200 rounds, it is beat to hell (the rod) i am thinking about having a machinist whip me up a steel one, unless someone has an idea of what i can do. since this could mean my life, i have lost some confidence in it, even though i love it and have heard almost nothing but positive things about it. i would hate to sell it and buy a 1911, but i will if it’s the only way to get reliability. help would be appreciated.

mike
August 27, 2004

1911 for reliability? yeesh…I don’t know that much about 1911s, and have Very Little experience with them personally, but my understanding is that you’d easily be into 2.5 to 3x the Ruger’s price to get a 1911 that would equal its reliability or improve on its accuracy….anyone else feel similarly??

about the guide rod…that really doesn’t sound like normal wear to me, again, tho, I’m no expert. call ruger’s people, they are rumored to be excellent. what I Can say from fact is the following…

I recently purchased a p95 decocker-model 9mm (p95dc) for $289 New at a local sporting goods store, and I Love it…this is my first handgun and I’ve done a lot of learning so far…my groups were Horrible when I started, and still need improvement, but I have not had a single malfunction of Any kind over the course of about 1,500 rounds of assorted winchester target, wolf, or umc cheapo loads…good stuff. I’ve also added a Hogue slip-grip (a must for the p95/97) and a hi-viz front sight that I haven’t shot with yet. I’m saying all of this because I break my gun down pretty much everytime I shoot, and I have not noticed any wear like what you speak of, my guide rod is alittle dingy because of its hard-to-clean nature, but other than that, absolutely no wear on it…anyhow, I have rambled, I have seen barrels/guide rod combos recently on ebay and also Brownell’s…perhaps you could replace it w/out sending it back to Ruger? Hope some part of my rant helps! good luck!

I own two rugers, a KP91DC (.40 SW) and a KP95DC (9mm). the 91 is an ex police issue gun and has well over 10,000 rounds through it. It runs out just fine as long as I dont use my +P+ lead reloads. Factory loads are the best to use I have found in my .40. Doesnt matter the strength.

The 95 has well over 5,000 rounds down it’s barrel, a mixture of +P+, handloads, lead, FMJ, JHP and others and has yet to malf on me because of something the gun did to me. I didnt clean it once for about 1,000 rounds and it got pissy and started malfing on me. I cleaned it right there at the range and put 100 more rounds down the tube with out a problem.

I trust my family and my lifes to my rugers. And I own many different kinds of firearms (S&W, 1911’s, Rugers, CZ’s, Walthers, and a couple Llama POSes)

I just bought a new P95 (man. saftey) and I am really looking forward to using it. I will be amazed if I am unhappy with it as my other Rugers (GP-100 & Single Six) are some of the nicest handguns I have ever fired. I was surprised at the new P345 though as it felt top heavy to me, where as the P95 seems to have the weight distributed well.

did you guys who had jamming problems with your guns. did you clean and oil the thing before you fired it or did you just shoot it wondering what the sticky stuff was? maybe you left too much oil in the moving parts.

Zman
October 19, 2004

El Rosso :

The only jamming that I have seen is when one of my children have fired the P95. They do not hold the weapon tight enough and then the gun jumps in their hand a bit which results in diminishing the ejection of the fired shell casing. I have never had any jamming when I have fired it. I do not clean the gun every time I shoot either. I shoot several times a week and gun cleaning would be all I ever do. I have been shooting the Winchester 100 round value pack with good results (walmart is the cheapest I’ve found).

I OWN A P944 AND IT IS AS RELIABLE AS YOU CAN GET. I HAVENT HAD ANY JAMS,MISFEEDS OR MALFS TO DATE. MY RUGER IS THE ALLOY FRAMED UNIT WITH THE SAFTEY/DECOCK AND FACTORY HOUGE GRIPS. HERES SOMTHING COOL, THE HICAP MAGS ARE ONLY 11 ROUNDS BUT ANY P SERIES 9 MIL.HICAP WILL WORK IN YOUR 40!IT GOES VICE-VERSA ALSO MAKING A 40 “HICAP” A 15 ROUND 9 MIL.MAG. I ALSO OWN A WELL USED P89 AND THIS IS WHAT I AM BASEING MY INFO ON. I GOT RID OF A TAURUS P945 45ACP TO GO TO THE LIGHT OF RUGER. THE TAURUS WAS A CHOOSIE GUN WITH AMMO. THE RUGER IS NOT AND THAT IS WHAT MAKES A WEAPON WORTH CARRYING.

You can get boxes of 50 Winchester for $4.86 a box at Academy. They are the same rounds that are in the $10.98 100 round value pack at Walmart. You can also get the CCI Blazers at Academy for $3.86 a box, but I haven’t tried the Blazers in my P 95 yet.

I have had 2 P95DC’s.The first was a stainless and had well over 2000 rounds of every ammo out there pumped through it with no jams.I was stupid and traded this pistol for a taurus pt92 9mm.Big mistake! This thing was more picky about what was shot through it than a playboy photograper’s camera.I now recently bought a used P95DC for $269 and put on a Hogue slip on grip as I did with the stainless and I have put 200 rounds through it thus far with no mals.I do not care for the grips much(slip on grips help) but for reliability, you can’t get much better.Take it from a former “Glock Snob”.

November 15, 2004

My first Ruger was a P90. Since then I have added a P89 and a P944. All of my Rugers have never failed to feed or fire with thousands of rounds between them. I can’t say the same for my Glock or 1911. The Ruger P-series are the best damn handguns I have seen as far as reliability and strength are concerned. I have never seen one malfunction before. The one thing EVERY Ruger P-series auto needs is a pair of Houge soft rubber grips. The stock plastic is a little slick - but narrower for those with small hands. Can’t go wrong with a Ruger, totally dependable and American made.

November 17, 2004

Which is better? man. safety, decocker or DA. I am getting ready to buy a kp95 and need to know which one to get.

Zman
November 19, 2004

That depends on you ! I like the Decock or Man. saftey as they both have the hammer to manually set. If you want to minimize the chance of a accidental discharge, the man. safety is the way to go. With the decock you can drop the hammer, but the weapon is ready to fire with the full pull of the trigger, as opposed to having to move the saftey into the fire position. I personally don’t care for the DA only.

bigjrfan
November 19, 2004

It depends on your preference. I like my decocker model. The decocker functions as a safety. When it is in the down position the weapon cannot be fired or accidentally discharged, because it places the firing pin in a position where it can engage neither the hammer nor the chambered round, plus it disables the trigger. When it is in the up position, the weapon can be carried with a round chambered and the double action trigger pull is strong enough to prevent an accidental discharge.

Zman
November 19, 2004

bigjrfan:

I believe what you have described is the Man. saftey model. The decocker model drops the hammer, but the lever springs back up into the fire position. The man. saftey model looks about the same, but the lever stays down disabling the fire sequence as you descibed above.

PS : I checked out Academy and they do have good prices. Thanks

bigjrfan
November 19, 2004

You are probably right. I looked at my pistol and it is a P95, not a P95DC.
Also, I bought some CCI Blazers to try, but it has been too wet here to go to the range. I’ll let you know how they work out.

Zman
November 19, 2004

I look forward to your eval on the CCIs. I have found Wolfes head ammo (9mm) at Midwayusa.com 1000 rounds for $89.00 (approx) and this seems to be the cheapest anywhere.

bigjrfan
November 20, 2004

I have never tried any handgun ammo produced by Wolf, however, I purchased some of their .223 rounds to qualify with our AR15’s at work and I will never purchase them again. On about 1 out of every 3 or 4 shots, the shell cartridge would expand against the chamber of the weapon and would not eject. We kept having to stick a cleaning rod down the barrel to force the cartridges out of the chamber. I think it may have been due to he fact that the cartridges are made from steel rather than brass, however I am not positive that that was the reason they expanded. In any case, it was a bad experience, and I haven’t bought any since.

November 24, 2004

I use the cleaning solution that came in my Outers gun cleaning kit and it doesn’t hurt the polymer frame. I have seen instances in the past where it left discolored spots on the polymer stock of our Colt AR15’s, however I never have had it damage my Ruger.

Zman:
Today I fired 80 rounds of the CCI Blazers in about 15 minutes. I cannot tell any difference between them and the Winchester 115 grain fmj.
The only problem I had was that twice I had an aluminum casing bounce off of my forehead, I guess because they are so much lighter than the brass casings of the Winchesters. But for $3.86 a box I can live with the aluminum. All in all, they were an excellent round to target practice with, and I would recomend them to anyone who doesn’t save their casings to reload.

I just bought a used p95dc, after waiting 18 mo.
to find one in the paper.(used),they sell as fast as boston whalers do in Fla.I noticed the double
springs inside, way cool, and the siglike setup with the barrel, the polymer rails put the glock rails to shame. If it was a lil’ smaller it’d probably outsell glock, I just wish the trigger pull wasn’t as long.

December 1, 2004

Joe :

The decock springs back up to the fire position after dropping the hammer. The manual saftey is the only one where the lever stays down.

Bigjrfan :

I’ll check out the blazers. Are you sure they are aluminum casings? I have never seen any aluminums. Steel, brass and nickel are the only things I can think of that I have ever seen. I have a bunch of 38 nickel casings that I have reloaded (a bit on the hot side) and I have been experiencing some failures in the casings. If I were firing them out of anything but my GP-100 (357) I would be concerned.

Joe
December 1, 2004

so if thats the case when i push down on the decocker lever what happens? I mean is the gun safe I need to have it kinda safe cause I work armed security out at a port so I need some info.

Zman
December 1, 2004

Joe :

The decock releases the hammer so that the gun can be fired with a full pull of the trigger or by pulling back the hammer and the short pull of the trigger. There is NO complete safety with the decock model. Only the manual saftey model can be set on safe and disable the firing sequence until the saftey is placed back in the fire position. I suggest you see for yourself by dropping the hammer and seeing the difference in the amount of trigger pull required to fire the gun in double action mode. Only you know how much saftey you need. I like the decock model myself. The gun is always ready to fire if a round is in the chamber. If you need more saftey with the decock model don’t put a round in the chamber, but you will have to operate the slide before you are ready to fire it. I don’t want to have to think about pulling the slide if shit hits the fan !

I will pick up some blazers this weekend and give them a shot (no pun intended). I am curious about the aluminum casings, the last time I saw anything like what you discribe was on 3″50 shell casings when I was in the Navy. They had some sort of mixed metal casings on the newer rounds and they were UGLY by comparison to the left over WWII brass rounds we had.
I’ll let you know what I think of the blazers after shooting up a box.

Just a quick comment for those who have had jamming problems with the ruger P series pistols. I have owned two and both have had several thousand rounds fired by me through them. No problems what so ever. However my buddy tried out my p90dc and it would jam on him almost every round. I watched him and noticed that his off hand was under his grip hand pressing up on the magazine. That was causing the jamming problem. So, as long as you hold the pistol correctly, no problems what so ever.

bigjrfan
December 7, 2004

I just experienced my first jam ever on my P95. It jammed twice, both jams coming on the 6th round fired out of the magazine. I think it was caused by either excesive heat, powder residue, or a combination of both. I had fired almost 250 rounds doing various rapid fire exercises, and the motion of the slide became so slow that I could hear the slide return after the report of the round.
I can’t complain at all though. The weapon has had close to 2500 rounds fired through it and has never given me any problems until I put it through some pretty heavy abuse today. I’ll give it a good cleaning and I’m sure it will be fine.

December 18, 2004

I was just sitting here reading all of the interesting comments I’ve seen, and I figured I would give my two cents. the first gun I ever bought was the decocker p89 ruger, it is by far the best firearm I have ever shot, and I have shot many, My twin brother is in law enforcement, and he has a glock, my ruger is far more rugged and accurate. it is 4:58 in the morning here, and someone is messing around my house right now, I take a look out the window from time to time, and all I know is that concern about the accuracy or stopping power of my p89 has not nor will ever cross my mind, in actuallity, I kinda hope whoever it is gets some balls and tries to enter, they will leave in a hurry. (in a fucking sandwich baggy)anyway, I have shot my brothers glock 17, and mine right along beside it and I am getting much tighter groups at 25 yards with the ruger than the glock. He shot them both with the same result. To me the glocks are just overated. like a lexus. all a lexus is, is a piece of shit toyota with some frills, and I don’t even see what the big deal is about glocks, they look blocky as hell, my p89 is sexy as hell compared to that ugly ass thing, plus, I have always liked hammers, I don’t have to go through the long pull with mine like he does with his glock. I know there are some die hard 9mm haters out there, but keep in mind that a .45 acp delivers 400 ft from the muzzle, and a 9mm delivers 383, not much difference to human flesh. I can say to anyone out their that if you buy any ruger you will not be dissappointed, they are in my opinion one of the best if not the best modern pistols on this planet, they are built like no other, and they boast reliability that few others can. If you want a gun that says boom when you pull the trigger, get a ruger, and don’t forget to clean any firearm after putting a good amount of rounds through them, not maintaining your firearm will get your ass killed almost as quick as using a jennings.

sorry about posting that shit twice, I got trigger happy, lol, by the way, I read an article not too long ago about nato testing of certain sidearms for military applications (of course it is nato) and only 3 guns passed the test, sig, para, and ruger, after the extensive firing tests, the pricy glocks slide cracked. you get what you pay for my ass. I too had not cleaned the P95 after several hundred (600 to 700) rounds being fired and when the gun was horribly dirty it did begin to malfunction. After a good cleaning (5 to 10 min.) it was back good as new. Once again it reconfirms me as a die hard Ruger owner!

Income tax time is rolling around and I am about to get my 2nd Ruger. There is a 22lr revolver at academy that I’ve had my eyes on for a while. I think it is $199. I think I am also going to pick up a Winchester Defender pump action 12 ga. to keep around the house.

I have a Stainless new model single six in 22LR and 22Mag w/ 6 & 1/2 ” barrel. It is single action and really sweet ! That single six is the epitome of Ruger quality. Since it is single action you don’t even have the play in the weapon that a double action has (because of the swing out chamber of the double). In addition, with the removable chamber it is super easy to clean. The 22 LR rounds are dirt cheap (550 FEDERAL for less than $ 9.00). The Mags are not really cost effective unless for varmint elimination. Not to beat a dead horse, but if it’s a Ruger, it can’t be beat !

I bought a p95 about three months ago and have really put it to the test here at our local range, Ive shot everything from winchester to wolf { which i think is really sucky ammo for the p95) and from blazer to cor bon. and all in all i really like the weapon, I know everyone says they love there ruger more then there glock and stuff but for bettin my familys life as well as my own, i sleep with my ruger. My 2nd auto was a P89 bought in the early 90’s. Its reliable but not accurate. Maybe 4 years ago I bought a used P95DC at a gun show. Its been 99.9999 -percent reliable and very accurate. I love it. May still be my favorite gun overall. Please to shoot, a little thick but light for carry. The only gun I hit better with is 1911 Kimber Custom.
Highly recommend the P95, glad some of the U.S. troops are getting them now. I have a 92FS also and don’t like it near as much as the P95.

My friends call me the doctor. Reason being is that surgical with a P89 in my hands. Any where i want to put that projectile, i’ll do it with pinpoint accuracy. Doesn’t matter the conditions or the distance. Thats just one of the things i pride myself in. Well steady hands, natural body relaxation, and perfect breathing don’t always suffice in nocturnal situations. Does anyone know of any internal laseraims that are produced for the P89?

I just bought a used ruger P89DC 9mm today at a gun show… this is my first purchased gun though i have shot many.

The RUGER - i put 250 rounds threw it as soon as i bought it… not one hang up nor a single miss fire, I was using CCI Blazer ammunition… two 15 round mags, one 17 round mag, and one 20 round mag…
in succession i emptied the two 15s as fast as i could with no problem, i then emptied the 20 round clip all at once as fast as i could with no problem, in fact it didn’t even heat up all that much…

even with my left hand cupping the clip while shooting it didn’t jam up…

but the slide after 250 rounds was a little sticky

i cleaned the gun, there was of course plenty of loose residue but it cleaned up fine… so i put another 250 rounds threw it…

(somewhere along the way in that second set of 250 rounds on of the casings did eject into my face but i was also walking to the right while firing which could have had something to do with it somehow…)

i am very impressed with this gun… i got it for $199.00 with two 15 round clips and a box

complaints:
1. its a little bulky (which i actualy kind of like)
2. its louder than all hell… My roommate was shooting his SKS at the same time as me with the Ruger. The ruger was easily louder than the sks rifle.
3. the grip is a little wide and fairly slick, but i will switch it out with some rubber ones as recommended here.. (they sell on e-bay for around $5.00 - $10.00 pre shipping)

Perks:
1. holds 16 rounds factory
2. holds 21 round with an extended clip
3. never seems to jam
4. fires after being dropped in mud
5. seems more accurate than my roommates Sig 9mm
6. the clip release on both sides
7. its very well weighted
8. it doesn’t heat up enough to burn you unless you fire about 35 rounds threw it extremely fast, where the Sigs burn the hell out of you after 10 rapid fired rounds

I am a retired police Officer, served 20 years. been retired for 35 yrs. I wish we had P rugers when I worked I had to use my service revolver two times and was satified both times, I have shot many different handguns. A month ago I bought a P95DC stainless and I only wish we had them when I was on the street I still go to the range every week and have put 500 rounds through it. I sold my Glock 17 and glad that I switched to the ruger. I like the Lorraine Bobbitt decocker. Some of you might be old enough to remember her when she Decocked her husband with a knife… Get a Ruger P95DC an enjoy your retirement. I do, retired for 35yrs. and going strong at 85.

This gun’s slimmer design and polymer grip felt much nicer than any other p-series that I have felt. How do you disassemble the P95DC?

Zman
May 2, 2005

Bob : If you look at the left side of your P95 towards the back you will see a line on the slide and the stock. Align these marks and then push out the slide lock. Make sure the mag is out and the ejector is pushed down. The slide comes right off. DO NOT take the spring assembly off or you may lose the small retainer lock. It is super easy to disassemble and clean.

i bought a ruger p95dc for 200 dollars used. it is an amazing gun, the only issue i have with it is if i need a new barrel i have to send it in to ruger and they dont send my old barrel back. there are several pieces of the gun that are on a one for one exchange. i think that a gun should be fully replaceable, except for the serial numbered peice. other than that i clean my gun every time i use it whether its 2 rounds to 200 rounds, and i have no problems at all. so far i’ve put about 1500 rounds through it and who knows how many rounds have been through it since ‘96. great gun recomend it to anyone looking for a 9.

June 21, 2005

Well, I bought a P95 last week. Decided to field strip it just to become familiar with the gun. It came apart, per instructions, without a problem. Putting it back together I apparently did something wrong…the gun jammed…won’t go together, won’t come apart. It is now sitting in the local gunsmiths shop. It hasn’t even been fired yet. I admit…I am a novice handgunner but I have had a Smith & Wesson for 10 years (422) that has never given me a moment of grief! What did I do wrong assembling the P95? and are they really that difficult to reassemble?

bigjrfan
June 21, 2005

I don’t know what you could have done wrong, unless you put the barrel in upside down (which I am not sure is possible) however I can assure you that the weapon reassembles as simply as it field strips. You should not have to force anything into place.

Zman
June 22, 2005

Steve : The only thing I can think of that could cause a problem would be the ejector. You must push it down and fwd to get the slide off and maybe you pushed it back up in cleaning. I know that if you leave the ejector down after reassem. the hammer will not stay cocked (on decocker or man. saftey models), but as soon as you would slide a mag. in it would push the ejector back up anyway. As I said you may have pushed it up and then jammed it when reinstalling the slide. My rule of thumb is “Never force anything”. Things go back together as smoothly (or as difficult) as when they disassemble. The one thing to watch out for is the recoil (spring assem.) retainer ring and lock ring. I lost my first set. Now I clean the springs on the rod and there is no real reason to take it apart anyhow.

I just bought a Ruger P-97. I have had several different Rugers and never had a problem. The first time I shot this P-97 I had 6 missfires in 24 rounds. It was not the ammo, the primers didn’t have a mark, therefore the fireing pin was not making contact. Now when I did this, The gun stil had most of its orriginal packing grease in it but I made sure the barrel was clean. Anyway, I then cleaned it fairly well and got most of the thick yellow grease and only had one instance of misfire in 30 rounds. I have now sprayed the hell of the entire fireing pin area with hi power gun scruber and will hope that fixes the problem tomorrow. Has anyone ever had this happen. Does it sound feasable that the fireing pin area is just gunked up with that heavy cosmoline and will work itself out? Its just very dissapointing.

I do not have any idea how to disassemble your gun, however I do have some advice…Sell it for whatever you can get out of it and buy a Ruger. I owned a jennings nine and it was the biggest piece of junk I have ever seen. Bryco Arms made the lowest quality, most unsafe weapons possible. If you do not want to take my word for it, just type in Bryco Arms on MSN Search and read some of the results. If you want a quality pistol for a low price, go to Academy and buy a Ruger P95 for about $320. I promise you won’t be sorry.

I bought a P89 earlier this week (Academy, $383) and immediately ran 150 rounds through it with no problem (factory grease and all). I’ve never field stripped a gun before, but had no problem quickly breaking down the gun. It is kinda large for me for concealed carry, but I’m happy with it so far. It was between the Ruger and a CZ 75, but the Ruger just looks way better. Glad with the choice I made, even though the gun is FUCKING LOUD!!!!! I also would like to comment on those who have never owned Ruger Pistols Don’t judge the gun for it’s size, looks and price. Bill Ruger designed his guns to shoot and for every American can afford. many of you in the law enforcement community are aware the majority of all crimminal’s especially those gang bangers use a cheap ass Raven or a Jenning’s Bryco .22 or .25acp to do their dirty deeds. They do not use Rugers , and also to all you Security Guards who are looking for a decent duty gun I fully recommend Rugers, in fact Security Guards don’t get respectable pay the deserve to buy Sauerkruat’s or Glock’s stay American Buy Strum, Ruger.

Well, I just purchased a P95DC, used. Damned thing is heavier than my 1911 Ballester Molina that I purchased for around the same price. I got two 10 rounders and two 20s.

The P95 has very nice sights and shoots very well. The weight absorbs any hint of recoil. Until somebody mentioned it here, I didn’t really notice the massive creep in the trigger, but that really doesn’t matter to me. Heavy guns, heavy trigger pull, creep, blah blah blah. You adapt, that’s all, unconsciously, through training.

With the P95DC using Federal ammo, I shot everything I aimed at. My BM is getting jealous, which is only just a slight bit looser in the groups, but does a respectible job herself. I just don’t trust the BM’s safety to make it a carry gun. A shame. Moving on….

I’ve owned Glocks before (x2). I sold em and replaced them with a Steyr M40 (main carry gun), a gun with 3 safeties. I just HAD to have Black Plastic AND a safety. Now, that weapon is another thread. So, now, with this Ruger, I have another weapon without a safety, but a decocker, but, I feel the trigger pull just won’t allow an AD.

And, again, I got my Black Plastic, which I almost love as much as pure steel.

My feelings are, judging from my experience with a 10/22 rifle and other Ruger handguns, I must say, judging from the way the P95DC shoots, the Steyr is going to start getting jealous as well.

The DC’s trigger pull is enough safety, and there’s a lot of reassurance in knowing that you grab and shoot, with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

This P95DC is now No. 2.

Ramble off.

September 9, 2005

I do not know about any .380 ammo, but for a 9mm you can get a round called Hydra-Shock hollow points made by Federal. They sell them at most gun stores. However, if you intend to carry these rounds for basic civilian personal protection, you must think ahead and consider all angles. Anytime you are involved in a situation where you must use deadly force in order to defend youself, you will still be charged with a crime, and will have to convince a Grand Jury that you acted in a lawful manner to STOP, not KILL, your attacker. It will be hard to convince a jury that your intentions were lawful if you used the most deadly round available. My suggestion is to carry a simple jacketed hollow point round and fire well placed shots at center-body mass. The hollow point round will penetrate your attacker and stop inside the body, as opposed to a regular slug round, which tends enter one side and exit the other. This will prevent your shot from hitting someone that it was not intended for, thus protecting the “third person”, while still having enough stopping power to disable your attacker.

Does anyone know, regarding the decocker vs. double action only models- is there a mode you canput the decocker model in so that it continues to shoot in double action? Or is only that first shot in DA, then every shot thereafter would be SA?

How much slimmer is the DAO version (since it doesn’t have the decocker). As I am generally only down w/revolvers, I was thinking of getting a P89 as my first auto pistol, but want the option of shooting every round in DA. The decocker sounds nice though.

I have owned my KP95DC 10-shot Decock only pistol, for 6 mos. which I paid $350.00 for. This pistol is very safe even with the absence of a manual safety. I have used 3 types of ammo. 1. Brown bear–russian ammo available at gunshows supercheap, which failed to cycle the action everyshot, stove piped like mad, and smells horrible, 2. CCI blazer which fired and cycled perfectly everytime 3.Winchester target/range USA9MMVP 115gr. FMJ which has also fired flawlessly and is what I recommend. The polymer grip gets slippery after many shots from sweaty hands, a hogue universal fit rubber grip is what I would recommend. Field stripping is very easy and reassembles easily. Recoil is average for a medium frame semi-automatic pistol. This pistol looks great with the Stainless Steel slide and black polymer frame, fires everytime with the 2nd and 3rd listed ammunitions, and is perfect for personnel protection, whether at your side or the side of your bed. I recommend cleaning your pistols after every use so you know that they are ready to use at a moments notice. Enjoy the Ruger–and absolutely great gun. Safe shooting, Jim.

Purchased a Ruger P95DC for $319.00 five day ago will pick it up in five more. Never had a gun before 53 years never want one. But new people moving in our neighbor and wifeS is home alone our kids are gone. I just don’t want to be a static.
So here a few question
1. Ammo, any brand better price wise or quality.
2 You guys shoot alot(1000-5000) rounds. I don’t plan on using it that much but is a minumum rounds fire (100?)needed for gun to function correctly.
3 Do I need to clean before I use or after firing?
Any comment greatly appreciated

September 27, 2005

Ernie:
Welcome to the world of Ruger. You have chosen an excellent weapon for home defense. As far as ammo, I recommend that for target practice you buy either the 100 round value pack of Winchester 115 grain FMJ at Wal-Mart or go to Academy Sports and Outdoors and buy CCI Blazers.
Both are a quality target round for an excellent price. For home defense, you’ll need to have hollow point rounds. A hollow point round is more likely to expand (flatten out) and stop when it enters a body (or wall, if you miss) and you will not have to worry about the round ending up in someone or something that you did not intend. This is especially true with a 9mm, which has a reputation of being a “hole puncher” because of the high velocity and relatively small caliber (diameter) of the projectile. You will not have to fire any minimum amount of rounds in order for your new Ruger to function properly, however I do recommend that you and your wife fire the weapon enough to familiarize yourselves with the function, and practice often enough to remain familiar. Being good with a weapon takes lots and lots of practice, and it is not like riding a bicycle. You must stay in practice in order to stay good. In answer to question number three, you shouldn’t have to clean the weapon before you fire it for the first time, however you should clean it after each use. Powder residue, heat from firing, and excessive oiling are all factors which will have a negative effect on the preformance of a weapon, especially a semi-automatic. If you are not familiar with handguns in general, I recommend that you take a handgun safety course, or at the very least read over every piece of literature that comes with your weapon. Always be safe, but also keep in mind that an unloaded weapon is nothing more than a really expensive club. An intruder will not give you time to stop and load your weapon before he attacks you. It would also be a wise idea to familiarize yourself with the private property laws and deadly force laws in your state. Most states have their penal codes posted on government websites for all to view. I hope that my information is helpful to you and your family, and do not hesitate to contact me via this blog or e-mail if you have any other questions. And above all, enjoy your new Ruger!

The new P95s have the 15 round (9mm) high capacity mags. The new models (or at least some) have the picatinny rail also. I think you will enjoy this weapon very much and if you have read most of the above comments you will see you have plenty of company.

November 5, 2005

I have questions about the P-89 model –

With the P-89 Man. Safety version the first shot is the only double action shot then the rest of the mag is S/A, right? (Assuming you dont cock the hammer for the first shot)…

But what about the P-89DC model, is the first shot the only D/A shot and then the rest of the mag is S/A or is every shot the long D/A pull?

bigjrfan
November 5, 2005

The only difference between the manual safety model and the DC model is that on the manual safety model the decocking lever stays down and acts as the safety. On the P89DC the lever decocks the weapon then springs back up, and just like the manual safety model, the first shot is double action and the rest are single. The only model that fires every shot double action is the hammerless double action only model.

Ruger P95
This was my first semi-automatic hand gun. From the first time I shot it until 1500 or so rounds later, it is still making 5″ groupings, off-hand, front site, front site, front site, at 14 yards. Also, I have NEVER experienced a jam. I find that with a somewhat more expensive hand gun like the Kimber 1911 or a Caspian, my groupings are 3″ with same specs. So, what I am saying is, perhaps people who don’t like the Ruger P95 might want to clean their guns and take a gun class to learn how to shoot. Don’t blame the gun. Blame the operator.

can anyone give me some shooting advice? i recently purchased a p95 brand new- took it to the range once so far-shot about 150 rounds through it -couldn’t seem to group my shots any better than about a sheet of notebook paper at about 15 yards-i know its not the gun because i’ve heard too many people talk about its accuracy-any advice? maybe change the 3 white dot sights?

Make sure that when you aim all 3 white dots are alligned and that the dot on the front sight is the same distance on either side from the other 2 dots. Take a deep berath, then exhale all of the air out of your lungs before you fire. Breathing while you fire will actually affect your shot grouping quite a bit. Place the PAD at the tip of your finger on the trigger, never place the joint where the 2 bones come together on the trigger, or you will pull your shots to the right (or left if you are left handed). Finally, always SQUEEZE the trigger, never pull. Use one smooth and consistant motion throughout the trigger pull. Neglecting to do this will also cause you to pull your shots to the right. I hope this helps you out, and enjoy your new Ruger!

bigjrfan-the breathing thing really helped alot-much steadier with most of the air out of my lungs-you were also right about the trigger pull -useing the pad instead of the joint-definitly cut down on pulling to the right-shot another 250 rounds today-managed to qualify pretty good at 3,7, and 15 yards-still having a little trouble at 25- any more good advice for hitting that mark?

I just bought my first handgun, the P95 with manual safety, and I love it. I really don’t have anything to add - what everyone on here says is true, its accurate, reliable, and the newer ones (which I bought) have a picatinny rail to easily mount a laser or flashlight on - a nice feature. And 15 round mags are standard now.

Contrary to what someone posted way at the top, you cannot carry this cocked-and-locked with the manual safety. Wish I could, but its not that big a deal.

****Note to everyone**** Mec-Gar makes a 17 round mag that is the same size as the stock magazine. They figured out how to squeeze two more rounds into there, I’ve purchased two and they are on the way, if you google it you can find them for around $18-$20. 17+1 in the chamber, 18 rounds of ammo and the magazine is flush with the frame, its a great buy if you own this gun.

If you are considering buying a P95, do it, there really is no good reason not to. Save that $300 extra you’d spend on a more expensive but no better gun and buy a butt load of ammo and practice practice practice. The P95 is highly underrated, probably because of the price, I love this gun!

we have 3 rugers in our family and they are by far the best semi autos on the market for any price. they never fail and are dead on accurate. use a decent brand of ammo in them and clean them once in a while and you could not ask for a better gun. of the 3 we own over a 10 year plus period of time not one has ever failed to fire and operate. when i went for my ccw the instructor was hyping a silicon spray lube…tried it and it sucks…..bad. just use plain old gun oil and you will have a very reliable pistol. have many friends who own sigs, glocks, and s&w but none equal my ruger in performance or reliability. i have converted many over to rugers over the years based just on the performance of mine. great weapon for any price.

My first and only handgun so far was the law enforcement/military only Ruger KP94DC w/integral Laser sight. Only approx. 1,200 were ever made. Bought it brand new in 1994 for $770 after tax. I have 4 factory 15-round pre-ban mags and 5 15-round aftermarket mags and 2 aftermarket 30-round mags. To the best of my recollection, I have never had any jams. I’ve fired approx. 1,500 rounds through it over the years. I always clean my gun after a session at the range. I had a trigger job done to lighten and smooth out the pull. The only complaints I have are 1) if shot by a right-hander, even with trigger pulled all the way back, hammer will, more often than not, fail to drop at all or have 1 or 2 sec delay before dropping. Problem was there before the trigger job. Still not fixed. Fires fine left-handed as I am. 2) A year or 2 after purchase, the lens for the laser fell out and was lost due to the constant jarring during firing (or bad fit, not enough glue, etc.). Haven’t been able to use the laser since then. Other then that, I fracking LOVE my Ruger. On another note, for all those that wish their pistol had more stopping power, check out http://www.concealedcarryoutfitters.com Click on link for Extreme Shock ammo. 2 different types. The AFR (Air Freedom Round) is the best for urban or home carry because it dumps all its kinetic energy in the first 7 inches of soft tissue, reducing risk of “shoot-through” but disentegrates upon hitting hard targets like interior walls, airplane skin, etc. The 2nd type is the Explosive Entry Fangface “Anti-Terrorism” round that penetrates up to 14 inches but also breaks up on hard targets. Just to show the stopping power of this ammo, their website shows a picture of a 505 lb. boar that they took down with a single 9mm round!!! Be warned though, the ammo is a wee bit pricey.

Having recently purchased a Ruger P95DC 9MM with the intent of carrying it for work as a guard for an amored car business. I downloaded the manual for it and found it had been discontinued and superseded by the P95DPR. I am wondering what changes were made for the new model as far as the inner workings are concerned and if I will be able to gain access to parts and service for my gun, should the need arise. I really like my P95 and the price certaintly was right. I just get nervous when I see it has been discontinued and wonder why? Thanks, Ron

I recently bought a Ruger p95 and right off the bat it didn’t blow back the hammer all the way, so sometimes you have to cock it a little. This makes me angry because I love shooting this gun, but I want it to perform reliably

My son bought a used P-95.We went to the range. Lots of misfeeds & jams.I examined it & found it was very dirty & had an aftermarket magazine. We went to the gunstore where he bought it.We traded the cheap magazine (even) for a Ruger magazine, cleaned the P-95.Have fired thousands of rounds with no misfeeds. Is’s more accurate than my P-95 but not as accurate as the P-97.I just bought 2 15 round RUGER magazines,1 for him 1 for me.P-95 is my favorite firearm.

I have a p944 40 S&W and I absolutly love it. I have about 1000 rounds on it and it starting to fail on me. I have casings failing to eject from the barrel. I have cleaned my gun everytime I am done shooting so I know is not dirty. I just went shooting today and cleaned the gun last night to see if I would get the ejection problem and I did. Out of 50 rounds I got three malfunction. Any ideas on what to do? my e-mail is jonchos@hotmail.com Thx.

I bought a p89 decocker in stainless a couple years ago… Using the ruger factory 10 & 15 rd mags I have *never* had an issue, with at least 20,000 rounds or more fired. When I first bought the gun I made the mistake of picking up a bunch of aftermarket magazines, ended up throwing them away and buying four ruger 15rd mags, and since the p89 has been the most reliable handgun I’ve ever owned, hands down.

I have a P89 that has an aftermarket steel guide rod, a ported EFK barrel, adjustable tritium sights, and Hogue grips. It’s fired a couple thousand rounds with no problems at all. The wife likes it so much I’m probably going to have to give it to her. My Colt 1991a1 is the fav but it killed a barrel bushing after 2500 rounds (fit became very loose) and it needed a bit of tuning to make it reliable to begin with…also a lot of money to make it accurate. If Ruger made a high cap alloy framed pistol with a light rail I’d buy another. You can’t beat the value and out of the box reliability.

“Stopping Power” A pistol has no stopping power. I suppose you could throw the pistol at someone and it may “stop” them, if only for a moment. I guess it all depends on where you hit them when you throw your gun at them as to how good the “stopping power” of said gun would be…
Obviously I’m saying that no gun has any better “stopping power” than any other gun. The shot placement is what matters. If you shoot well enough to put your bullet where it will incapacitate whatever it is that you are aiming at, a deer, boar or a person, then a .22 short will have just as much “stopping power” as a .45 Auto. You shoot something betwixt the eyes, and it’ll be stopped. The size of the gun makes the least amount of difference.
So when we speak of the “stopping power” of any particular gun — we would have to assume that we are either A) throwing said gun at said target or B) we are speaking of a not-so-well placed shot that we “hope” “stops” whatever it is we may be shooting at.

If you’re throwing things, definately go with the Rugers. The non-polymer frame ones are heavy as hell, and will certainly damage whatever they hit. I like them a lot, and have a MKIII .22 and a P-90 .45. Anyways, ammunition type is actually important, and “stopping power” *is* a relevant thing. I live where there are large bears. Occasionally, one decides to eat someone’s livestock, or whatever, and you can get a “predation permit” to take the thing down. A .22 short, even right between the eyes, will NOT stop a full grown, 300+ pound bear. It won’t even slow it down. I can think of very few pistol-fired rounds that would make much difference at all in that situation, but ammunition, pistol type, and aim are all equally important for whatever task you wish to accomplish with flyin’ lead.

My P95DC is a great weapon, I bought it new and pumped about a thousand rounds through it with no issues other than limp-wristed operators that allowed more movement causing ejection failures.

I sold it to a buddy who had a tendency to pull the shots right, I bought a Kimber to replace it and didn’t care for it. Just didn’t feel right.

The guy I sold it to decided he didn’t like the right pull and offered to sell it back to me. I accepted immediately and it’s still my #1 gun to carry during hunting season, (lots of hunters who haven’t asked permission encroaching on my land, not going to bitch out hunters with guns without one of my own) and as a concealed.

Keep it clean and with a stiff wrist and you’ll be hard pressed to find a better all-around sidearm.

I bought my Ruger KP95DC 9mm in 1996 for $275.00 new and after many round’s down range and accompaning me on many camping, fishing, and hiking trips, not to mention constant duty as home and personal protection 24/7 this weapon has yet to fail me,flawless function 100% for 11 years. I’ve owned Glocks, many revolvers,1911’s and none can compare with the Ruger’s stellar performance.
It is outstandingly accurate and if you’re worried about the stopping power of the 9mm, just load it up with Cor-bon 9mm 115gr. jhp +P. It comes out of the P-95 at just under 1453fps, and has a little over 450foot pounds of muzzle energy.
This is getting into .357 Magnum ballistics with the bonus of a 10 or 15 round magazine.
The only modification I’ve made is to put traction tape on the front grip, the kind of tape you see on metal steps and stairs. Round the edges of the tape as you cut it out and it looks as if it came preinstalled and the slight sparkle from the tape actually improves the looks and as a plus it’s oil and chemical proof.
All in all this weapon is simply outstanding!

Dwayne check the ejector to see if it has gone partially in the up position. This will prevent the slide from moving foward and jam the slide.
Use something like a staightened out large paperclip to pull it back in the down position.
Hope this solves your problem.

I own two Ruger semi-autos. P-97 and P-95PR. The P-97 would not fire when I received it. Sent it back and now it fires every time. P-95 has never failed to fire. Probably around 3500 rounds through the P-95. My family’s life depends on those weapons for home security. I can depend on those Rugers to deliver it.

I just purchased a used Ruger KP95 from a local gun store for $349.99 and I can’t wait to take it to the range to see how well it fires. This is my first semi-auto handgun, I’ve owned several revolvers over the years and all of them with the exception of my S&W model 66 have been Rugers. I do own a few smi-auto rifles though. I carry my Ruger KP95 in my truck for potection because here in Texas state law says that you can carry a concealed handgun in a private motor vehicle without a CHL. (It is called the travelers law.)

I bought a p94 40 new 2 weeks ago. took it out shooting the next day, fired 50 rounds through it no problems. well on tuesday I went to the range and could not get through a mag with out it jamming. the problem was fte. So I took it out today and the same thing only this time the extractor would come out of its slot. I brought it home and grabbed some dummy rounds, too the gun apart, pulled out the extractor claw and started playing with the bend with needle nose pliers. the extractor looked like it had to much bend from the factory and the nob would not sit all the way in the hole + it would not grab the shell right for extraction. I had to put a small opposing bend in the rear and flatten the bend in the middle. It seems to cycle alright by hand now but the real test is when i put some powder behind it.
