Marginal Revolutions gives a logical reason why the NFL is against recruiting high school athletes, and the reason has nothing to do with high-minded ethics and everything to do with unions and dollars:
Why might a professional sports league seek to prohibit such draft picks? First, the prohibition is part of an overall bargain with a players’ union. Players’ unions are composed of insiders, people already in the professional sport. By banning high school players, the league extends the career of the median established player. Apparently this is a cheaper concession than paying those players more money. In essence the players’ union is redistributing money from the superstars to the average players. The very best players lose a few years off the beginning of their careers. But a comparable long-run penalty need not fall on the good (but not exceptional) high school players. Once they are drafted, they will enjoy a longer career than otherwise. The superstars, in contrast, can stick around with or without competition from high school players.

Has anyone ever gone straight from high school (bypassing college)to the NFL in its entire history? Has their ever been anyone that has ever played in the NFL that didn’t play college ball?
i think they should be able cause im a kicker for a high school in michigan and i think it is a good thing for kickers at least. all they do anyways is kick. they will have to takle here and there but i can do that. all you have to do is aim for the thighs, and rap your arms around him. make sure he makes the first move though. I would be good for kickers.if other positions they are running the risk of hurting them selfs. ur also runnin the risk of not getting an education. you could always go back. that is they players decision.

Has a player ever went from High School into the NFL without going to colledge?
I think football players should be going to the NFL after High school if they are dedicated and strong and good football players. I’m a football player in Holtville California and football is all I care about in my life. I would love to go to the NFL straight out of High Schol. I would love to play Running Back because I’m a very strong and dedicated player. I try to lead the team to a whole better season every year. I’m a football player that will never give up and always gives 120 percent of effort. I would give up anything for football. I love tackling people down but if I get tackled down I get up and do it again and make sure that it doesnt happen again. As a Running Back I try to be a leader and inspire my teamates to be as strong and as dedicated as me. My Dream is to become a NFL Football player.
if skipping college and going into the NFL was possible it wou8ld be done. Basketball is a skilled sport you dont have to be fully developed to play the game. But the NFL is for men i dont care what kind of great high school player u think u are but the fact is that you would get your world fucked up. The only exception might be kicker, long snapper, or maybe a natural cornerback (which is hard to find). Even then people would get hurt….bad!!!
I think that only kickers or punters or really really strong peoples should be drafted out of highschool. Because if they were just a little guy, but they were good. They would get hurt real bad real bad. And we dont want that now do we? but if they were to get drafted out of high school give them a few steroids and they be fine just like that shawne merimane he got them steroids and he turned out to be ok. Sure, when I was in high school I thought I could play with the pros, but it’s a completely different ballgame. Before you high school, hometown heroes let your heads get too big, take a few shots at the college level. You may reconsider exactly how big you are after an afternoon of playing okie with some full-grown men. As for me, there is no way a 17 or 18 year-old kid is ready to step on to the field every Sunday with seasoned men.

I dont even think a kicker will be able to handle pros. I dont know what the fuck some people are dreaming about but pro is a different world form your high school football. Im a trainer for one of the NFL teams. I listen to the kicker`s story of how they could already kick 60yd field-goals in practice in high school but after going to college, they couldnt over come the pressure during the game. Pro is a lot higher than college, its a different dimension from high school

There is a nineteen year old in the draft this year, Amobi Okoye, the defensive tackle from Louisville, he’s a senior this year, watch the senior bowl, hes got more scouts looking at him, than Troy Smith even, so age doesnt really matter, what matters is how fast your body matures, and how much natural talent you were born with, and how much more you can gain through practice. Either way this boils down to protecting the older players careers, and the ones coming out of college (22-24 years old)
