Web Censorship in China
Saturday, March 27th, 2004 | Rocky Top Brigade |
RTBer Brian Ruckle, a Tennessee blogger living in China, reports that the great firewall of China has blocked access to Blogs.com and Typepad.com blogs. Blogspot.com blogs were already blocked.
China has partially, hesitatingly embraced some free market reforms, but a free market depends on the free flow of information (otherwise you get inefficient markets). If China wants to succeed economically, they’re going to have to accept that economic freedom and political freedom go hand in hand. “Restrictions on the free flow of information” is one of the seven signs of a non-competitive state.

Thanks Les for supporting us over here in China. Thankfully my blog is still not blocked but I could just as well be next. The Great Celestial Nanny probably doesn’t give a rip that we are turning our blogs black in support of those blogs who were recently blocked behind the Great Firewall. Possibly in the works is some sort of logo bringing attention to the problem. Internet censorship is not only a problem here but in many other countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran and others.
Joe Bosco, prominent blogger in China, persuades fellow blogger to expunge criticisms of the prestigious university where Bosco teaches. On Bosco’s own site, he gives himself credit for advancing First Amendment freedoms in the U.S.
A look at Joe Bosco — preacher, poet, professor … and fighter for freedom of expression who appreciates that free speech can be taken too far:
