Gifts for the Vision-impaired
Tuesday, December 21st, 2004 | Home Life, Macular Degeneration |
I’ve mentioned before that my mother has macular degeneration. For Christmas we bought her a few items from the Independent Living Web site to make routine things a little easier for her. Here’s a list of some things we bought, along with a few things she has and likes.
Colossal timer (this thing is enormous!)- Large-button phone
- Writing guides
- Talking watch
- Big button TV remote and a simpler one
- Jumbo playing cards
- Illuminated magnifying lenses
The writing guides are simple, but handy. When mom fills out checks she has trouble seeing where to fill in the date, amount, etc. The check guides slip over a standard-sized checkbook. They have cutouts for the check fields and signature area.
Disclaimer: I don’t have any financial interest in Independent Living. Just passing on information for anyone else who has vision-impaired friends or relatives.

My 93 yr old aunt has the same thing. I take care of her business affairs and have bought the talking watch, illuminated magnifier, large button phone, etc for her. It’s still tough on her, but the items have helped. She listens to audiobooks on tape a lot, so I bought her that for Christmas.
Macular degeneration sucks. My dad had it. We bought a big button speaker phone with the speaker button on the right and then programmed the speed dials down the right side so 3, 6 and 9 corresponded to each of us kids. That way he only had to feel for the right side of the phone. It’s a terrible disease that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. I’m glad to see they are making more devices for dealing with it.
Macular degeneration does suck. Katie is mom’s first grandchild. She had wanted a grandbaby for a long time, and now that she has one she can barely see her. Like you say, I would’t wish it on my worst enemy, and to see it happen to a great person like my mom just really makes me mad at the injustice of the entire universe. Grrr…
