Random Thoughts on Toilets, Tables, and Dishwashers

Apropos of nothing, if I build or remodel a house, I want a urinal in the master bathroom. I’ve mentioned this to people, and gotten laughs or funny looks, but if you’re a guy and you go into a public restroom to pee, what do you use - the commode or the urinal? Right. You use the urinal.

Maybe unforseen problems lurk. I once used a similar thought process to conclude that I wanted a booth in my breakfast room. After all, I prefer booths at restaurants. Then it occured to me that there were some differences. A table at home needed to be multi-use for things like wrapping presents, and a booth doesn’t really work for that. And at home not everyone sits down and leaves at the same time, and there’s no waitress to bring coffee. People would have to get up to let people in and out of the booth, and that’s no fun.

John Peterson (via Andrew Tobias) had an idea that I’d like to try: dual dishwashers. When one dishwasher finishes, instead of puting the dishes in the cabinet, pull clean dishes straight out of it as needed, rather than putting them in the cabinet. Put the dirty dishes in the second dishwasher. When it fills up, run it, and put away whatever clean dishes are left in the first dishwasher. Sounds pretty cool. Plus, it’s good for those big dinner parties when you need two dishwashers.
