Disabled Girl Raped; School Didn’t Call Police

I’ve mentioned before that I think schools should call police more often than they do when actual crimes occur (as opposed to violations of some overly-strict zero tolerance policy). Too often, schools either do a poor job of punishing real offenders, or violate the student’s constitutional rights.

Here’s a case in which a violent rape occurred at a school, but school officials didn’t want police called because they were worred about media attention.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 16-year-old disabled girl was punched and forced to engage in videotaped sexual acts with several boys in a high school auditorium as dozens of students watched, according to witnesses.

Authorities are investigating and no charges have been filed in the alleged attack last month at Mifflin High School. Four boys suspected of involvement were sent home and have not returned to class.

Also, the principal, Regina Crenshaw, was suspended and will be fired for not calling police, school officials said. And three assistant principals were suspended and will be reassigned to other schools.[...]

School officials found the girl bleeding from the mouth. An assistant principal cautioned the girl’s father against calling 911 to avoid media attention, the statements said. The girl’s father called police.

Student Assaulted, School Doesn’t Call Police

Government schools – at least in Columbus – now care more about their PR than they do about the safety and well-being of the children they have in their care all day long.

Were that my daughter, I guarantee they would have called 911.

Because I would have walked into that school with a running McCullough chainsaw.

What about the kids who were watching it? I think they should be charged too for not getting help or trying to stop it.

  5. Debbie says:

Worried about the media?! What about the girl?!Don’t you get into that profession to protect the children, not ignore the needs of them!

Bingo! I just typed in a comment and got transferred to your web page. Thank you. I had a simular thing happen to my daughter she was raped by two boys that she though was her friend. turns out that it was all part of a joke. she didn’t understand because she has a disability. Her disability is called OCD, I’m am her mom, I also have it and so does all of my other two daughters. If you have never heard of this condition it is when you tink of things over and over again or wash your hands repeadily hundreds of times, count, or trace things hundreds of times. It has really been a hard pill to swallow. by I managed to tell my story to enough people, and they believed my plight to help me fight the system. I feel that I have a strong case because personally I feel that all americans have the right to get a fair education, and are entitled to fair speach, as well as a safe, and bully free environment to live and go to school in. I have assisted my daughter and have put her in a position to sue the school, which we are preparing to bring justice my daughter. I pray for the best day jet to see their faces when we walk away in peace victory!
