I just saw an episode of Schwall’s World on WBIR that mentioned a BBQ joint in Rockford, TN owned by a guy named Townsend. I had never heard of it and couldn’t find it on the Web.

Townsend’s Market & Deli is on Grade Rd. Grade runs between Russell Rd and Cusick Rd. It’s probably a few seconds shorter to approach via Cusick, but I don’t know exactly how to do it, so here’s directions via Russell:
Singleton Station into Rockford, right on Williams Mill at the stop sign, bear right onto Russell about 20 yds ahead, after about 1 mile, Russell reaches the RR tracks and Grade comes off and crosses the tracks on the right, keep left and you’ll see the pink building in a bend just ahead.
He is only open until 6pm.
You can also turn left onto Russell from E Hunt, in which case Grade is on the left at the end of the stretch that parallels the RR tracks.
btw, I don’t think he makes his own BBQ. I’ve never noticed a smoker or smelled any hickory. He’s better known for his pigburgers and for being a really nice guy.
Here’s another way to go. Come down Alcoa Hwy and turn left on Singleton Station Rd just past the Buddy’s BBQ which will also be on your left. This as approx 1 mile before getting to the “airport motor mile”. Stay on Singleton Station til you cross a set of RR tracks, then turn right on Cusick Rd just after the tracks. Go about a block on Cusick and you will re-cross the RR track and as soon as you do turn left on Grade Rd. Stay on Grade Rd for approx 2 miles and you will come to Townsend’s on your left. “You can’t miss it”! We had a couple pigburgers there today with fries and John’s delicious ice tea. A pigburger is a good size sandwich that is a combo of hamburger and sausage, dressed the way you like it. Different and delicious. There is a nice eating area not immediately evident when you walk in, or you can get anything to go. He also has pulled pork BBQ, hot wings, ribs, makes his own sauce etc. John is a very friendly and interesting man to talk to. I would recommend this place to anyone. During the winter months he is open Mon-Sat 10:30 am til 6:00 pm, and later in the summertime. Phone is 977-5445. We’re hooked!

For the sake of anyone approaching from Oak Ridge or far west Knox, you can take Pellissippi Pkwy, exit at Cusick Rd just past the airport exit, left at the foot of the offramp, under the parkway, then right on Grade Rd just as you get to the RR crossing, approx 2 miles to the deli.
