This is interesting. It’s a 1911 made specifically for short cartridges (9 mm, .40 S&W, .45 GAP) and sized to match. The picture above shows the EMP compared to a comparable short-barreled 1911. From The High Road.
Bonus! – This Kimber is a wicked CCW gun, with no hammer or sights to snag on.

For those that aren’t married to the 1911 platform, the Springfield XD SC weighs less than the Kimber and at less than half the price is a really good value. Blasphemous, I know.
1) Not to sound cynical, but I guess Springfield had to do something with all the frames left over from the failed .45GAP Mini-’11 project.
2) Have you seen the Kimber Aegis at the Armory, Les? We have one in the showcase available for fondling…
Benson: true, but I haven’t warmed up to the XD. I like 1911s. Not saying I’m sold on this gun, but I like the idea of a 1911 designed from the ground up for smaller cartridges.
Tam: I’ll have to check it out.
This would be a great submission for COC
It is now submitted. Thanks!
In my opinion the SA EMP is more desirable as a carry 9mm in the 1911 platform or design. It is well made, and as far as quality and accuracy I’d give it an A+. I bought it Saturday, shot 50 rds of fmj and no hiccups. As compared to the Kimber Aegis, I don’t see the point of having the upswept beavertail grip safety if the hammer is bobbed. Hammer bobbed cocked and locked? I’d have the thing snag on my clothing.

It would be great if this little gun had the safety and mag release convertible for left-handed people. Anybody know?
Yeah. The thumb safety is ambidextrous, and i believe the mag release can be switched over for southpaws.
This gun is gorgeous!! ive really just begun exploring the wonderful world of 1911 and I would love to shoot it before buying it to feel recoil and all… anybody know a place that lets you do that? By the way i own the springfield xd sc in 9mm and the xd in .45 and both are great but shoot very different from any 1911 ive shot, but you can drop em in a mud puddle shake it off and shoot it without any problems out of em! Durable little boogers! and I agree! a great value!
I just purchased the SA EMP in 9 mm. I also purchased two extra Mec-Gar magazines for this pistol, giving me five mags total. Today I started the break in period with it with 115 grain Winchester FMJ ball ammo. I had no fail to feed or eject problems, however, the weapon failed to lock open on the last shot on all but two occasions with 100 rounds fired. On shot # 71 I noticed that it continued to print low and to the left. The string got longer and longer until I noticed that the rear sight was about to slide off the weapon. I centered the rear sight as best I could and tightened the allen screw with the wrench supplied with the weapon. I will have to wait to see if I got it properly aligned until the next session. Has anyone had any problems with this model failing to hold open on the last shot?

I BOUGHT THE EMP AS SOON AS IT HIT THE MAKET. I LOVE THE GUN AS A CARRY PIECE. I CARRY IT, SHOOT IT AND THE ONLY TIME IT IS OFF MY BODY IS WHEN IM IN THE SHOWER OR BED! THE ONLY 2 THINGS I DO NOT LIKE ABOUT THE GUN IS THE WAY TO FIELD STRIP IT. I FIGURED OUT HOW TO DO IT WITHOUT THE LITTLE PLASTIC PIECE AND ITS NOT THAT BAD. ALSO THE FRONT STRAP SHOULD BE ROUGHED UP FOR GRIP. I FIXED MINE WITH A AFTER MAKET RUBBER GRIP THINNGY. I SHOOT LEFT AND RIGHT HANDED SO THIS GUN WORKS GOOD FOR ME. I’VE HAD MANY GUNS AND I DO INTEND TO KEEP THIS ONE. IT HAS PERFORMED WELL AND IS AS ACCURATE AS SOME OF THE CUSTOM GUNS I HAVE OR HAVE SHOT IN THE PAST. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE.
I have several 1911′s in my collection and finally added the EMP. WOW is all I can say! Carries better than my Kimber Ultra Carry. Lighter, thinner and shoots great. I’ve put over 5000 rounds through it and not one single hickup. I reload my own ammo so I have advantage of ultimate control on my load development. Would highly recommend this firearm to anybody looking to carry concealed. My wife prefers to shoot the EMP over any other handgun I own, so I guess I’ll be the proud owner of two of these.
I just bought a similar Springfield, a Micro Compact with a 3″ barrel. From the first round (after cleaning) it would not feed any HP ammo 45ACP. I have a Kimber Ultra Carry II with the same problem, but solved it with Wilson mags and Federal Hydra-Shock ammo. The Springfield fed round nose ammo fine, but would not feed any HP from any brand of mag.Beautiful handgun, you would think they would know it would be used for self defense.
I bought an EMP in 9mm and love it so much I just bought another one. (Nearly new used for $900.) Why have 2? Because I have 2 hands I guess. (Kidding….) One for home protection and one for the car & carry. Never a problem with either.
I’m looking to buy my first SA EMP and was thinking of buying the 40 cal. Anybody know amything about the reliabilty and the recoil of the .40.Please HELP!!
Locally, there’s plenty of EMP 40′s for sale, but a bit hard to find them in 9mm. That should say something. I have 2 EMP’s in 9mm and love them! I’v shot with many friends at the range who have bought them because of how much they liked the feel and accuracy of mine. Need I say more? Go 9.
Ive been with my 1969 Colt .45 satin blue w/wood grain for about 12 years. Bought it in box never used. & man di i love it, but just purchased a new SA EMP .40 & love the weight and balance of it. Highly recommended to all fans of the 1911 series. But still also have a berrett PX4 storm, was my side arm n Iraq & Afganistan wouldnt give it up. My PX4 got me out of some crazy s#@%.
