Homemade Bubbles

We got the kids a battery-powered bubble blower. Cheap at six bucks and nifty as all get out. It also came with a comb that you blow through that worked really well. Katie usually can’t blow bubbles, but she can with this one.

Anyway, we ran out of bubbles in no time, so we Googled and found a page of homemade bubble recipes.

A lot of the recipes call for glycerin, which we didn’t have. (You can get it at the drugstore.) We used the Karo syrup recipe, and it worked pretty well.

1 cup water
2 tablespoons Karo syrup (white corn syrup)
4 tablespoons dishwashing liquid (everyone recommends Dawn or Joy for bubbles)

Here’s another recipe page from Bubbles.org. His recipes use glycerine and Karo syrup.

Is it really cheaper than just buying large quantities of premade bubble solution?

It’s probably not cheaper. The big advantage for us was that we could keep blowing bubbles without going to the store. Some of the recipes apparently make bubbles that are really big or really long-lasting.

    It’s also pretty fun. :-)

I was frustrated trying to blow large bubbles for my 2 1/2 year old with store bought solutions. I tried a recipe that was 1/4 cup of soap (I used Joy), 2 1/4 cups water, and 2 Tablespoons glycerin (I got a 4 oz bottle of store brand for $2.99). I was very excited to try them and very disappointed when I did. They popped extremely easily – often before they left the wand. I tried adding more soap, not much help, and then some Karo syrup. Did not find much improvement and I thought the bubbles left too much sticky residue. I will try again but would like to avoid the Karo syrup.
