He wants to extend presidential terms and get rid of those pesky term limits.

President Hugo Chavez called for radical changes to Venezuela’s constitution Wednesday night, proposing reforms that would eliminate current limits on his re-election and extend presidential terms.

Venezuela President Hugo Chavez wants to be allowed to be elected indefinitely.

Chavez, speaking to the National Assembly, also proposed ending the autonomy of Venezuela’s Central Bank, which would give him access to billions of dollars of foreign reserves. He also called for increasing the government’s power to expropriate private property before getting a court’s approval.

I’m always amazed when people defend Chavez.

A president trying to elude court oversight and grab extraconstitutional powers? Where could Chavez have gotten such ideas?

Good one. For the record, I’m against many of Bush’s moves to forego constitutional protections involving fourth amendment protections for U.S. citizens (non-citizens, not so much).

The fact that Bush is pushing back on our constitutional protections doesn’t mean that it’s OK for Chavez to massively set back constitutional protections in his country.

As it is, Chavez can come to the U.S. and criticize our leader, but people in Chavez’s own country can’t criticize him.

I agree that what Chavez is doing is wrong, and I’m glad you recognize that Bush is abusing our system of government too. I’m always amazed when people defend Bush.

‘Cause after all, there’s really no difference. Right, persimmon?

Gosh, yes, Tam! Drawing a comparison between two things does indeed imply that there are no differences between those things. I’ve never seen Bush and Chavez in the same room together, have you?
