You’re Not Supposed to Sleep on Pillow Shams?

Thursday, January 24th, 2008 | Polls |

So says Busy Mom:

Eventually, she just began bringing her own pillows with her when she visited, apparently in order to avoid the sham thing altogether.

A close friend of Busy Dad’s stays with us from time to time. He just cuts to the chase, and for reasons unclear to me, he discards the regular pillows and sleeps on the decorative pillows.

I want my guests to be comfortable, but, pillow shams do not care for being washed with that kind of frequency, and, I sure as hell ain’t gonna dry clean them.

While none of this is terribly tragic, it causes me low grade consternation, but, the final straw was when I realized my kids had this apparent gene deletion when I found the (fairly nice) shams from Busy Boy’s room rolled up in the windows of his room to keep out drafts, and, I found Busy D. actually inside the pillow sham on his bed, sleeping-bag style.

I asked my mother and my wife, and they said it was fine to sleep on pillow shams. If you were ignorant and dumb and furthermore you were raised by wolves.

I dunno. I like the way the bed looks when its made and the sham-covered pillows are in their place. I just want them to do their duty as pillows. Our pillow shams are made from the same silky material as our comforter and are nice and comfortable. Why shouldn’t I sleep on them?

I don’t have pillow shams. This is the first time I’ve ever heard the expression. The closest thing I ever had to it was an Empire Strikes Back pillow case with Boba Fett, Lando, Chewbacca, and Han on it.

So, yes, pillow shams should be slept upon. That’s what pillows are for. If the designs are interesting, they should be mounted in an embroidery hoop and hung on a wall.

Additionally, I believe I have seen pillow shams at my grandmother’s house. They tend to be smaller, lesser pillows that are not comfortable at all. It is best to completely eliminate this genre of padding in favor of more traditional pillows.

(And let’s not even get into sleeping on top of sheets or between them.)

Can’t vote because I don’t / won’t have pillow shams in the house.

What the hell is a pillow sham?

A pillow sham is a fancy pillowcase. It’s usually longer and wider than the pillow, and you usually insert it through a flap (like the one in a pair of tighty whities) instead of through the end of the pillowcase.

And I wanna know why the Hell they don’t make pillow cases like they make the shams. I sleep on the shams because I get sick and tired of the cases coming off due to the gaping hole down one side…

Lots of emotion about pillow shams…

My mom obsesses over stuff like this. My solution when we travel to see my parents (or my wife’s) is to bring my own pillow.

I’m with Mr. Steel. If they don’t want us to use the shams then make the regular pillows and cases as good as the decorative ones.

Mark and Chris: I’m with you guys. The shams are nicer, and they don’t make the pillow bunch up on end the way it does in a regular pillow case.

I don’t sleep on them because I don’t have them.

We don’t use shams any longer — Shana used to keep them on the bed — “It looks nice” — but finally got tired of me complaining about having to take them off the bed when I wanted to sleep, and having to put them back when I made up the bed in the morning. That, and the fact that she had too damn many of them…

Now, if they were more comfortable, then I could see leaving them on there. But most of the ones I have seen are oversize, and a coarse material — or even worse, stiff corduroy.

Easy solution … keep more than two pillows on the bed. Although, this looks extremely suspect if you’re a single male. *snicker*

There’s an easy solution for that, too, Dillow. Simply keep more than two pillows on the bed. This solution, however, becomes extremely suspect if you’re a single male. *snicker*

[...] You’re not supposed to sleep on pillow shams. But I do anyway. [...]
