Bill is damn right! As our economy heads off the precipice into no-man’s land, it’s obvious that our local governments will have to do more with far less. This means that there will be fewer police to handle increased crimes of all types, including muggings, auto theft and home invasion. It seems quite obvious that we must be responsible for our personal safety, just as previous generations were – they did not expect to be protected by “big” government.
I blame our current state of affairs on our state of mind. We have lost the self-reliance and backbone of our forefathers, the traditions of our religion, and hope for the future.
It is time to renew Neighborhood Watch and Safe Home groups, time for neighbors to be good neighbors, and time for personal responsibility for many things besides safety. We have been soft, lax and lazy – expecting others to do for us, when we could easily do so for ourselves. We must stand up for our friends and neighbor, as we would expect them to do for us, and end the “me, and only me” greed and apathy that has infected so many in our country. Our new President represents the return to these values, and I can only hope it’s very infectious!
