I remember when Netflix was the Internet’s number 1 source of direct-to-your-door DVDs instead of the Internet’s number 1 source of popup ads.
Heh. Yes, I used to have a Netflix account (loved it!), and yes, I loathe the near-ubiquitous pop-up and pop-under ads.
I’m assuming that type of advertising gains them some number of subscribers. I’m also assuming they don’t have any way to measure how many people (both subscribers and non-subscribers) now have a negative opinion of Netflix, due to the pop-ups. But I’m pretty sure the Netflix Marketing Veep has a hard-cover edition of “How To Kill Your Brand in One Easy Step” on his nightstand.
