So life stays interesting.
Right after Christmas we had to take my 82 year old mom to the hospital. She spent a week there and everyone pitched in and stayed with her 24/7 during that time. I’m really proud of the way we all came together for that.
She’s out of the hospital and in the second week at the transitional care center which is supposed to be getting her ready to come home. She’s clearly not ready to come home right now, mentally or physically. She’s very sedated and talking out of her head. We’re trying to figure out if that’s the way she is now or if it’s the medicine they have her on, particularly the Seroquel, which tends to cause confusion and extreme sedation. We tend to think the latter.
My brother and I met her primary care physician this morning and explained our concerns. This is the last day she’s on the antibiotic they were using to treat her sinus infection, and that particular antibiotic can cause confusion. He’s taking her off of Lipitor, which can cause weakness. He didn’t commit to taking her completely off of Seroquel, but he’s going to talk to the psychiatrist about reducing the dosage, which is currently 25mg three times per day.
Melissa felt lousy last night, with a scratchy throat, fever, and trouble catching her breath. She went to the doctor today and he arranged to admit her to the hospital for a sever case of strep throat. After work I went with her to get her admitted and settled in and then drove to Seymour to get the kids and bring them home. We hope she’ll get to come home tomorrow, but it could be up to three days. Busy, busy, busy.
