Spoilers ahoy!
The big surprise tonight was that Charles Widmore was on the island in 1954 as a young soldier.
All of the clues so far pointed to his connection being the Black Rock, the 19th century ship that was somehow landlocked deep in the island’s interior. Widmore had a painting of the Black Rock. He paid a fortune for the ship’s log at auction.
Furthermore, we learn that Widmore was one of the Others. I always had him pegged as being the financier of the Dharma Initiative. It’s possible he was both. At some point he feels the island belonged to him and that Ben (a Dharma person who helped the Others destroy Dharma) took it from him. I’m curious to see how that’s explained.
So there was a hydrogen bomb on the island in 1954. Faraday told the Others to use lead to patch the leak in the exterior and bury it. What happened to the bomb? They’ve never explained the island’s power source. Maybe that’s it. It’s also possible one of the Dharma stations was built around it. Last episode Pierre Chang told a construction worker at the Orchid station that there was a powerful source of energy that would enable time travel. In the same scene we saw a worker who was sick with what may have been radiation poisoning.
I wonder if the Smoke Monster would set off a Geiger counter? When the world started rumbling around Miles I thought we were going to see ol’ Smoky.
Relationships
Discovering hidden relationships is part of the Lost intrigue and I think we’ll seem more revelations going forward.
Widmore is Penny’s father. Who is her mother?
All signs point to Ms. Hawking being Faraday’s mother. Who’s his father? We learned tonight that Widmore sponsored his research for a decade.
Does Faraday have any siblings (or maybe half siblings a la Jack and Claire)? I ask because my wife thinks that Faraday’s love for Charlotte may be sibling love rather than romantic love. Like I told my wife, if that’s true then it’s going to be a little awkward when Charlotte finds out. Sort of like when Princess Leia finds out Luke is her brother and remembers kissing him to make Han Solo jealous.
Speaking of Star Wars, in the prequels (spittoie!) we find out that Force powers are a function of midichlorians in the person’s bloodstream. Further, parents pass that characteristic to their children. I wonder if in the Lost universe the ability to time travel is passed from parent to child.
I don’t think Whitmore was a soldier.
He was wearing a US Army uniform, but it was taken from one of the soldiers killed by the others, as where the Garands and Carbines.
The name tag on his jacket didn’t say “Whitmore” either. It had the name of the dead soldier it was scanvaged from instead. (I don’t have a screen cap and can’t recall the name right now)
You’re right. The tag said Jones.
