Line item look at TN’s share of the stimulus

Thursday, February 19th, 2009 | East Tennessee, Economics |

Ken Marrero emails:

A local TV station’s media blog posted TN’s portion of the Stimulus package swag.  I offer a quick line item by line item analysis.  Short version?  Of the $3.8 billion, $2.4 billion is spent on Medicare and Education - hardly immediate economic Stimulus.  Of the remaining $1.4 billion, less than half would reasonably be considered stimulating spending, given the money stands a good chance of being spent in the Public Sector.

His full take here. (Link was bad before. Fixed!)

I wonder how much authority the state has to override the direction of spending and reallocate the money to better purposes. Bredsen and company has shown better fiscal policies then this bill allows, and I would rather trust our state reps to waste less of this money. I still expect half to be wasted, but half is better then 7/8s. I don’t see that returning the money will keep it from being spent, and I’m still going to be repaying it so might as well get more for my outlaying then well paid unions.
