It’s crazy enough that it just might work

You know how the ATM always asks if you want English or Espanol? Here’s an idea. “Couldn’t the ATM card tell the machine which is your preferred language instead of asking all the time?”

That’s the way to do it. I don’t mind companies collecting data about my preferences and habits if they’ll actually use it to make my life easier.

I actually hit the old B of A ATM yesterday. There’s now even a mention at the bottom of the screen to hit the menu button in order to change your preferences.
BTW, they have the slickest ATMs I’ve seen. You can deposit checks and/or cash just by feeding them into the machine. No filling out deposit slips. They scan the check and display it on the screen with a “This is for $x.xx right?” message to confirm that they read it properly. You have to do checks singly, but you can stick up to something like 40 bills in at once when you’re depositing cash. It just churns through them all and then displays an accounting of how many of each denomination with a total for your verification.
If you want a receipt, it even prints the scanned images of the checks on the receipt. Way cool.
Now if we could just get people to pull forward after they get their card back so that the person behind them can be using the machine while they put all their stuff away, life would be perfect. Well, better anyway.
