From comments on what Uncle learned about Facebook, I learned you can hide alerts from certain apps. So tonight I turned off alerts from Mafia Wars, Farmtown and the zoo thing.
Just mouse over the update from your friend. When the “Hide” drop-down appears choose the application.

Yeah, discovery of this is what saved Facebook for me. That and Adblock for Firefox.
