Bedding a 10/22 barreled action

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 | Guns |

Bookmarking this for reference. Last summer I used sandpaper and free time on the porch to freefloat my Ruger 10/22 barrel (picture above). A dollar bill wrapped around the barrel slides freely from the muzzle all the way back to the action. There are no contact points as the barrel heats up to shift the point of aim. Now I need to glass bed the action.

Hey Les, I bedded the stock on one of my 10/22’s recently and it worked out great. I used Devcon Putty for the bedding compound. It is resistant to anything you’d put on a gun and very dimensionally stable, plus it is about the consistency of peanut butter so it applies easily but wont move around on its own while curing. Also, Kiwi shoe polish (neutral) worked superbly as a release agent and cleans off easily. Finally, if you keep the stock barrel you will want to bed a small area at the front of the barrel, just behind where the stock ends, as the thin factory barrels shoot better with some support there vs being completely free floated. If you don’t want to bed there some people use a thin rubber pad (bicycle inter-tube) to provide similar support. You may have noticed the factory stock had a “bump” in that area for support that you sanded away when free floating it.

Cool. Where can you buy Devcon Putty?

That front barrel support does sound pretty important. Gotta think about that part.

I’d guess you could do at least 3 10/22’s with a pound of the stuff. I always mixed too much and wasted some.

Some good info here:

Rimfirecentral has several good threads on bedding in the 10/22 section. Some are stickied and some aren’t.
