There were a lot of scientific know-it-alls who assured us that global warming science was beyond all doubt. The backtracking is going to be ugly.

Except there’s been no backtracking. Look at what Phil Jones actually said!
He pointed out that IPCC is solid and that AGW is well supported and real, and that a short term leveling off because of TSI fluctuations and volcanic aerosols doesn’t change the fact that the planet has warmed at an unprecedented rate and that you can’t explain this change without human influence.
The dishonesty of AGW deniers is shocking. What’s almost as bad is how people are getting suckered by it because it’s what they WANT to believe.
Except that the pre-Climategate narrative was exactly the opposite of what we’re hearing now.
Pre-Climategate, we heard that the warming trend was accelerating. Global warming was going to be even worse than previously feared. Only immediate action could have any hope of saving the Earth. There wasn’t a moment to lose.
Post-Climategate, we find that there has been no “statistically significant” warming for a decade and a half.

Obviously we won’t know for a long time if this is a short-term leveling off or a long term trend change. Even if it is temporary, an obvious question is why all those doomsday climate computer models failed to predict the leveling off.
