August, 2010 – Washington Post Company sells Newsweek for $1.
The sale follows Newsweek’s deckchair-rearranging makeover in 2009. Michael Kinsley rips the makeover for an approach that’s antiquated in an Internet age of instant news, reader comments, and hyper-specialization.
I’m not an industry analyst, but my perception is that print news is going down like a submarine with a screen door and that most of the industry is still in hopeless denial. They still think they’re the gatekeepers, they still think the public trusts them, and they still think people want what they’re selling.
