The only reason I’ve heard of them is the game regulations in VA list a “continuous closed season” for spotted skunks, while having seasons for striped ones. The coat is not at all what I was imagining, however.
This September at Fall Creek Falls, I saw a solid black skunk. At first, I wondered if I was seeing a marten, fisher, or some other mustelid-type visitor from the Great White North. It was, nonetheless, indeed a large, healthy, and completely black skunk. I regret that I couldn’t get a photo.

With that coat it looks like a badger. It’s wild.
