Jakon Nielsen on the Kindle Fire

Kindle Fire Usability Findings:

Mobile web sites work best on the 7-inch tablet. Users had great trouble touching the correct items on full sites, where UI elements are too small on the Fire screen.

I fully agree with the assessment of a conventional kindle reigning supreme for long form fiction. I was never a big reader, but started when I began commuting by bus. I had no idea how fast I could read before using an kindle extensively. The big downside is non-fiction, such as manuals (PDFs) or other reference.

I store a lot of reference material for outdoor stuff, as I’m a cubscout volunteer. Rarely are the illustrations easy to read on a kindle, and an iPhone is simply too small for instructional purposes.

Really hoping the Fire is a good compromise for this use case.

I agree with Sean – Kindle’s not too user friendly when it comes to illustrations. I buy a lot of children’s books for my toddlers – and they don’t work well over Kindle at all.
