East Tennessee > No More Weigel's Jugs

SayUncle reports that Knoxville dairy farm and convenience store chain Weigel's will no longer use their returnable milk jugs. They've gone disposable.

There's a Weigel's on my way home from work and we often buy milk there. With the jug trade-in, a gallon of milk was just $1.99. And Weigel's Skim D'Lite is possibly the best skim milk anywhere. We even had the handy yellow snap-on pourspout for the jugs. Wow. It's so sad to see those cheery jugs go away.

Man, that sucks. I've been saving my little yellow snap-on pourspout for that day when I move back to Knoxville, but I guess I can toss it now. Well, actually, I already tossed when I moved to Richmond, but you get the point.

I don't know about milk jugs, but I know about booze. I went to my local Weigel's convenience store at 10:30 pm Tuesday night and was refused check cashing priveleges because, the clerk said, of the Memphis address on my VALID driver's license. (I'm pretty sure he just didn't want to sell me booze.) I moved here last year, but have a Blount county voter's registration card, Blount county bank checks, and car tags registered to Blount county. I have even previously cashed checks in this very same Weigel's. I intend to file a complaint with the BBB. If Weigel's doesn't want to sell alcoholic products (in moonshine country) then Weigel's should not stock them. I will not shop Weigel's in the future.

If you knew how many bad checks are written to convenient stores, you might not be so critical. Here in Atlanta, most businesses will not take any out-of-town check, end of story. And they will certainly not cash a check for an out-of-town driver's license.
