A&E > Best Cover Songs

SayUncle is taking nominations for the best cover song. Namely, when the cover is better than the original. For instance, Van Halen's version of "You Really Got Me" vs. the original Kinks song.

My nomination: Any cover of any Bob Dylan song, ever.

For best covers heard in or originating from Knoxville, there's Guadalcanal Diary closing their show at Vic and Bill's Deli with "Kumbayah," Stevie Ray Vaughan's extended "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" at the Civic Colisseum, REM covering Foreigner's "Midnight Blue" at the Tommy Bowl, and Smokin' Dave and the Premo Dopes doing the Batman theme music at World's Fair Park.

Warren Zevon did a great cover of "Back in the High Life Again" on his next to last album, turning standard 80s schlock into a really moving, complicated song about regret, knowledge of impeding death, and finding peace with one's self.

Hey, speaking of music, have you ever heard Southern Rock Opera (Drive-By Truckers)? If not, I'll pop a copy in the mail to you -- I was listening to it yesterday, and remembered how much I love it. For about a month, Zan would make me play itevery day when I took him to school -- "I want to hear the Drive-By Truckers. Turn it up Daddy. Louder. LOUDER! Roll down the windows!" Embracing his inner redneck, for sure.

It really is a great great album. While a concept album devoted to defending southern manhood and the cultural legacy of Lynard Skynard, done in the style of Skynard, seems like a moronic idea, they managed to pull it off.

Josh was saying that Drive By Truckers are great. I missed a chance to see 'em last year. I'd love to hear their stuff.
