Misc > More Sprint PCS vs. Verizon Wireless

Today (Saturday, though it's after midnight and officially Sunday), Melissa and I drove to Townsend and through the Smokies, and had supper in Gatlinburg. All along the way my new Verizon phone had much better coverage than her Sprint PCS phone. At one point she was talking to her mom in the middle of Gatlinburg and her phone conked out, so she used mine to finish the conversation. Now she's thinking about switching to Verizon when her contract expires.

That's why both my wife and I switched to Verizon from Spring PCS about 2 years ago. We couldn't even get a usable signal at our home in suburban Detroit. Verizon seems to have the most comprehensive service nationwide.

I have had a Verizon plan for 3 yrs and am thinking about switching to Sprint PCS. I live in Oregon and travel to the coast and the mountains a lot. Is there anyone out there who has an opinion on this? Sprint has way better cellular internet.

Research a little into a company called Qualcomm or 3g and you will find that both companys use the same networks. the big difference is in the chipset in the phone that you buy

Posted by: Justin at October 27, 2004

That is not true. We both use CDMA which uses Qualcomm chipsets. But we each have our OWN networks. Sprint is better coverage in some places. Verizon is better coverage in other places. Do the research and decide for yourself!

Which network has faster data transfers? Are either upgrading from the CDMA 1xrtt to the next generation?

Verizon is better if you are going to roam becuase you have unlimited roaming with the national plan but with sprint you have to have 500 minutes used in the sprint network, also verizon has better coverage than sprint in most places

Greetings everyone! I currently have Sprint pcs, as my cellphone service provider. When I first purchased my first phone, which was an LG, I was quite happy with the service. However, I would occasionally have dropped calls, primarily at home. I told a technician about the situation, who is based out of Texas. He had an LG phone and lives 7 miles from a tower but would get bad reception. He purchased a Sanyo 8100, at the time and the problem was solved. He did say that the 7 mile distance between his home and the tower, should have provided good reception but with the LG phone, that was not the case. He also mentioned that Sanyo cellphones are made specifically for Sprint.
I now have a Sanyo 8200 and I am very happy with the improved reception. I am now looking forward to the complete merge by Sprint/Nextel, to see new products.
Some may assume that the problem may be the service provider but it could be the cellphone you purchased. I hear people all the time, dropping a service provider, when problems arise and they quickly switch to another service, without looking into a different phone.
You can have a good service, with a bad phone or, a bad service, with a good phone. Do your home work, before making the move to another company, which ever it may be. Thank you.

I live in Copenhagen, NY and I have a Sprint PCS service. I have dropped calls all the time and I live 5 miles from the tower. I would love Sprint to merge with anyone who will bring better service to this area. Thank you

Hello everyone! I am no expert on cellphones however, what I wrote above, is based on what a technical support employee told me. I mention above, the improvement I had, with Sprint Pcs, once I purchased a"Sanyo" cellphone.
As far as Sprint merging with another company, it has happened. I was told, a few months ago, that it may take the rest of the year, for the merge to be completed, with Nextel. Sprint/Nextel, will be the name of the 2 companies combined. bye bye...

I currently have sprint service, I have one of the more expence pda phone in the store the i600. The phone does not have a good signal in the oddest places at the oddest time, even in my house. I do not understand how i have a 550 dollar phone that barely get signal in my living room. that just one of the reasons i am going to switch to verizon. the second reason is sprint phones are too expensive, you can get the same if not better phones with better services for 100s less.

I purchased a Motorola 730s thru Verizon because of its tri mode operation two years ago. Even tho I am very happy with Verizon's network and service, I am switching to Sprint because Verizon's signal is non-existent in the south bay region of Los Angeles. The tri mode is for TDMA/CDMA and GSM, not PCS.

Folks, Nextel is going away in the next year or so. (2007-2008) and their technology will be null and void. Sprint with their PCS Technology will be big player in the industry,...AND, other than business situations, why would anyone want the two-way (walkie-talkie) when Sprint's mobile to mobile is unlimited FREE? Can you HEAR ME NOW?

Posted by: at February 06, 2006

I've have been with Verizon for over 14 years! I'm so stupid, it took me that long to figure out that Sprint PCS is the ONLY way to go. Believe me, Verizon will drain your bank account in more ways that you can imagine. I had an 800 minute family share plan, but with a daughter in collge, it routinely went over the limit. Do you think anyone from Verizon contacted me to tell me to increase my minute plan. NOOOOOO! They love that .45 per minute overage. If you can get $300 per month from a customer, why settle for $129? THE REASON: You'll keep them because they will see that you care about their service and usage. EVERY time you go into a Sprint PCS Store, the Consultants are TRAINED to view your usage and make recommendations that will not only benefit you, but SAVE YOU $$$$. Bye, bye Verizon.

As the post says...........Can you hear me now?

I am a Sprint/Nextel customer and when I first got my Sprint phone it worked great. Then it started having weird signal issues. It wouldnt work in my house but it would work in the middle of the smokey mountains when my friends with verizon would give out. They told me Sanyo is the way to go because I have Samsung (the free one). But now that I have waited my phone has actually been getting better signal. I really think they are improving their network and almost everyone I know now has Sprint or TMobile because Verizon and Cingular will suck your bank account dry. My suggestion is to get Sprint/Nextel or TMobile when looking for a cell phone company in the midwest.

I have been with verizon for almost 3years. I get great reception BUT when we roan out of network we get big roaming charges, sprint has a program going for 59.99 & nightime starts @7:00pm, with no roaming or long distance charges at all I think I`m going to sign up, please reply.
Thank you Ceceey

I have been verzion costumer for 10 years. I see Sprint has better rates, but I am very worried about changing, I wonder if sprint has good coverage in LA area. Although Verizon is very expensive, I hate to get bad reception if I change. Any comments?

Posted by: Dee at June 11, 2006

ok, here's the skinny. Most current plans Sprint offers have unlimited roaming off of Verizon's Network, and some verizon plans do the same off Sprint's Network. Verizon focus mostly on the cdma 850 bandwidth while sprint focuses on the cdma 1900 bandwidth. This means that verizon will get better penitration with it's signal-the 850 bandwidth tavels through solid things easier than the 1900. Sprint dominates the data maket though with a much broader and cheaper evdo network which will be upgraded to the evdo rev1 in december. 3.1 mb/s is nothing to scoff at. I've had better experiences with sprint customer service than verizon's, and the plans are ussually cheaper with sprint too.

Just wanted to say ive been with Sprint for about 7 years and I am in a different city everynight (Tour Bus Driver) I never have dropped calls unless im driving into no mans land during a call. Always clear calls even when roaming in Canada or calling the aussies or europe. Hope this helps.

The cellular phone infrastructure in the US sucks. Due to their capitalistic system, they started having cell phones here in the US a long time ago starting with an analog infrastructure. Now that technology has advanced, they are trying to migrate into a digital infrastructure, however the cost of switching from analog to digital is to large for the companies to handdle. So who pays for that price? Us the customers. In europe they never had an analog infrastructure and they went straight into digital. The phones, the receptions and the plans are amazing. I mean here you have to pay extra for everything, where as in Europe everything is included in your plan (3way calling, texting, internet, email etc.) I have Sprint and they suck big time. We recently moved to a new apartment in Boston and I have absolutely NO reception on my phone. I literally have to leave my apartment, walk 2 blocks just so I can get 2 reception bars on my phone. When I called Sprint to complain their answer was "Since we don't guarantee reception inside buildings, there is not much we can do for you". Now why don't the sales reps tell you that when you go to a Sprint store to purchase a phone and a plan? Bad for business right? But it is mentioned in the plan contract. Yes that paperweight thing that no one reads? SPRINT SUCKS AND SO DO ALL THE CELLULAR COMPANIES IN THE US. Unfortunately they have us all by the balls, cause we live in times where everyone needs a cell phone and they need us the customers to pay for their infrastructure switch from analog to digital. By the way if they tell you that everything is digital it's a LIE. Nothing is 100% digital yet in the US!!!

I elect Sprint PCS for both voice and data. Sprint users can virtually access verizon networks at anytime by switching to roaming only. On the other hand, verizon opts its users to automatic B which is analog coverage.Their digital network isnt complete.

**note i used networks when i referenced verizon(plural) The reason is verizon is partitioned to different levels of coverage. You can notice that looking at their plans.

As far as data: sprint has a more developed 3g network and very well underway on 4g by septemper 26 2007 (wimax)
