A&E > Dylan on American Idol

Bob Dylan wants to be a guest judge on American Idol next season. When guest judges are on the show, contestants perform songs from the judge's repertoire, and get mentoring from the judges. Dylan no doubt sees this as a chance to introduce his songs to a new generation.

I guess the idea is to see how the contestants do with all different styles of music, but boy-howdy, did that red-headed kid stink it up on Gloria Estefan night or what? Poor guy; if he was any whiter he'd be CLEAR.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of Dylan, but I would like to see how these R&B style singers will handle his oevre. Actually, now that I think of it, I like Dylan's songs better when they're covered by Hendrix, who got his start on the R&B circuit.

I think it's hard for the contenstants to live up to the studio version of a popular song. I really noticed it on the Elton John songs: I was hearing Elton's versions as I was listening to the covers.

With Dylan, they almost can't sound worse. (And I like Dylan. It's just that he often doesn't try to sing well.)
