Guns > Thursday Gun Links #22

simonm3.jpgI wasn't familiar with punt guns until recently. These were extremely large bore shotguns mounted on boats and used for hunting flocks of waterfowl.

Kim du Toit offers his advice for picking a truck gun.

James Rummel at Hell in a Handbasket comments on non-lethal weapons. James, an ex-cop, has an opinion about the recent Supreme Court ruling on the requirement to provide identification to police.

.45 Kaboom. This one was caused by accidentally putting a .40 round in a .45.

LesJones.com is the number 5 Google result for "gun porn." Guess who's number 1?

Right to Keep and Bear Arms

Dave Kopel looks at the state of Japanese gun control. If you're a crook in America you have to worry about armed citizens. If you're a crook in Japan, you have to worry about the police, who have a 95% confession rate due to the minimal rights afforded the accused.

Gun control hasn't kept South Africa from having the world's second-highest murder rate: more than 12 times that of the United States. The South African government's new plan? More gun control.

Jeff at Alphecca has the weekly check on the bias. So one downside to saving up all of my gun-related material and posting it once a week is that I sometimes get scooped. This week Jeff scooped me in posting this great item from James Taranto of OpinionJournals' Best of the Web:

In a direct challenge to federal limits on political advocacy, the National Rifle Association plans to begin broadcasting a daily radio program on Thursday to provide news and pro-gun commentary to 400,000 listeners. --New York Times

In a direct challenge to federal limits on political advocacy, the New York Times Co. plans to continue publishing a daily newspaper to provide news and antigun commentary to 1.1 million readers. --Best of the Web

Speaking of NRA News, Windy City blogger Spoons finds the anti-gun Chicago Tribune supporting the NRA's right to have a news program. Amazing.

Publicola discusses a survey at KeepAndBearArms.com that asks readers what they think of an unnamed person who would do these things:

(1) He supported a seven-day waiting period for handgun purchases. (2) He called the Brady Bill "just plain common sense." (3) He said "I support the Brady Bill and I urge the Congress to enact it without further delay." (4) He endorsed the federal government mandating "local law enforcement officials to conduct background checks on those who wish to buy a handgun." (5) He signed into law an edict "prohibiting the carrying of firearms on one's person or in a vehicle, in any public place or on any public street." (6) He executed an "administrative ban" on importation of shotguns that can hold more than 10 rounds, which later became codified into law.

Who was the politician? Publicola has the answer.

Your Weekly Flame War: 9mm vs. .45

I'm sure this thread will settle the subject once and for all. I like this answer the best:

If you're European, refined, sophisticated, go to the opera, and feel the need to invade France... stick with the 9mm. If you're Not European, rough and rowdy, have to kill thousands of charging indians or religious island fanatics and like the Grand Old Opery, and feel the need to save France... stick with the .45.

They are called punt guns because the recoil causes you to drop back ten yards...

They are called punt guns because they were mounted on punts (that's a type of small boat...)

You can not fire them from the shoulder.

Think of how big a 12 gauge shotgun is,
now 10 or 8 gauge (and how much kick they have),
4 gauge is twice the size of 8 gauge...
& it's probally the largest shoulder firing shotgun you'll see.

Punt guns are 3 gauge, 2 gauge, 1-1/2 gauge...
