Guns > Thursday Gun Links #24

James Rummel at Hell in a Handbasket wants to know how many people name their guns?

James recently marched in a Columbus, Ohio parade with the Pink Pistols, a group of predominantly gay shooters formed to discourage gay bashing by going armed. The group took their name and inspiration from this essay by Jonathan Rauch. The parade organizer was anti-gun, and after the event tried to use her security personnel to take away people's guns. James describes what happened. Summary: she massively over-stepped her legal authority for no good reason, and James and the Pink Pistols displayed cool thinking and good judgement.

SayUncle spies this fine letter: "The primary reason gun owners want to end the so-called assault weapons ban is because it is a silly piece of feel-good legislation which only inconveniences the law-abiding gun purchaser. Yes, the NRA has all of the money and influence on its side. Unfortunately for Ms. Huffington, its members have all of the facts and logic on their side too."

These videos show why Smith &Wesson introduced the .500 Magnum: it's the best choice for blowing up gallon cans of peaches.

Famous and infamous people and their guns. There's an opportunity for someone to do a great book or magazine article on Elvis's guns.

In rare examples of non-Tuesday gun blogging, I reviewed a couple of 9 MMs and some .45s.

Jeff doesn't have a check on the bias this week, but he has an excellent response to a San Francisco Examiner editorial. In particular, he responds to the editorialist's characterization of the NRA's lobbying power as "fearsome."

"Fearsome?" The NRA has about 4 million members who pay dues to have their interests represented in Congress. How is this different than what the NEA does, representing educators? Are THEY "fearsome?"

The AARP "boasts" over 35 million members! That's almost nine times as many as the NRA. Is the AARP "fearsome?" The NRA is simply doing it's job. But because they support a position that the SF Examiner clearly doesn't, they're "fearsome."

Your Weekly Flame War: Pump vs. Auto Shotguns

This ought to settle it. We ought to put these guys to work on other questions, like nature vs. nurture and the chicken and the egg.

Quotes

I do believe that where there is a choice only between cowardice and violence I would advise violence.
- Ghandi

I believe in killing people who try to hurt you.
- Bill Clinton

If Matthew Shepherd had a gun in his sock, he'd still be alive today.
- Anonymous Pink Pistols Member, quoted in the San Francisco Bay Guardian

If anti-Semites hate Israel, that is in no small measure because Israel shattered the ancient stereotype of the helpless and sniveling Jew. Jews with an army! Jews who fight back! You can hate Israel all you like, but you don't bully it. Israel changed the way Jews see themselves, and it changed the way gentiles see Jews.
- Jonathan Rauch

Weekly Gun Pic - John Kerry and Gun Safety

A number of people have posted this photo, but the first place I saw it was at Spoons's site. Follow the link for the subtitle contest.

At first glance, the picture makes it look like Kerry is in front of the other shooter's line of fire, which is a serious violation of gun safety. The black stands in front of each shooter give away the true perspective: it's the photographer who is in front of the line of fire.

This next photo from Kim du Toit, however, shows Kerry violating Rule 2: Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. Kerry's grip is a pretty dumb way to hold a shotgun. Discriminations describes it as Kerry's Dukakis-in-a-tank moment.

The video here of the S&W .500 against a horde of angry watermelons is pretty impressive, too.

P.S.: The link to Alphecca's piece is wrong. It should be http://www.alphecca.com/mt_alphecca_archives/000301.html

Thanks. Looks like I did the old "right click on the comment link instead of the permalink" gaffe. Fixed.
