July 02, 2004News > Michael Moore's Opinion of Us Dumb AmericansThis is what Michael Moore says about his fellow Americans when he's in England: "They are possibly the dumbest people on the planet . . . in thrall to conniving, thieving smug [pieces of the human anatomy]," Moore intoned. "We Americans suffer from an enforced ignorance. We don't know about anything that's happening outside our country. Our stupidity is embarrassing." I defended the Dixie Chicks when they told an audience in England that they were embarassed to be from the same state as George Bush. It's an honest difference of opinion with an elected official. But Michael Moore is embarassed to be from the same country as the other 290 million of us. James Taranto beat me to the punch on implementing an idea that occurred to me after reading yesterday's account of Saddam Hussein's courtroom appearance. Put Saddam Hussein quotes and Michael Moore quotes side by side. "The real criminal is Bush."--Saddam, July 1, 2004 This would be even better in a quiz format, as in the Al Gore/Unabomber quiz. Since the release of Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 911”, movie-maker Michael Moore has been praised as a patriot, an open-minded thinker, and a true American. “There's a gullible side to the American people. They can be easily misled.” – Michael Moore, in his book Dude, Where’s My Country? "We need to change our ethic and aspire to be more Canadian-like." Michael Moore: “What happened to the search for Osama bin Laden?...You don’t think they [the U.S. government] know where he is?” "I agree with the National Rifle Association when they say, 'Guns don't kill people, people kill people,' " he told NBC's "Today" show. "Except I would alter that to say, 'Guns don't kill people, Americans kill people.' – Moore, in the Wall Street Journal’s editorial page on March 21, 2003. Friday, March 21, 2003 LoL, U americans are fucking stupid. U are blind to what other countries are experiencing. Geroge bush should be fucking shot in the head!!! Posted by: Alexandra at July 23, 2004I can agree with you 100% Alexandra! As an Australian i know do not like Americans or your country. Just to put that in plain simple american language 'I HATE ALL YOU AMERICANS!' The truth is that the USA has freed more human beings in 230 years than the rest of the world combined. France has freed almost no one. Ditto Canada. Exactly Trinity. Posted by: The Truth at July 29, 2004USA has freed WHO? All those people (including Americans) who sought fairness in Chile? Or one of many African countries? Or Central America? They were freed alright, of their lives. If you choose to defend America, I'd suggest that you avoid the misadventures of the State Department or the CIA. Posted by: Ed the Sock at September 11, 2004First of all, the two people who trashed Americans can't even spell correctly. And you're trashing OTHER countries? Learn to freakin' type. And second, i hate Americans and i AM Americans but c'mon, we're not nearly as bad as the French or even Canadians. I agree with Michael Moore that our goverment is trying to keep us very ignorant as to what is going on and it's OUR faults for going "Okay, sure. You tell us what's what and we'll believe you without questioning." But no, Michael, we should not be more like Canadians. Fuck you. Posted by: Rachel at September 23, 2004So i'm not a hypocrite, i'll correct my error: "And i AM american..." Posted by: Rachel at September 23, 2004"The truth is that the USA has freed more human beings in 230 years than the rest of the world combined. France has freed almost no one. Ditto Canada. Freed people? Why, were all these people in some sort of mega-jail? Dickhead. Posted by: slasher at September 28, 2004To the jackasses called Mickey Moron and (Sourass )Soros please spend your money . Be the fools that you are and the UNITED NATIONS want you to be . Remember we Won FAIR AND SQUARE ! Beware of a country that fears you or your guns . Look at crime in Austialia and England now that criminals have the guns . To :Mickey Moron and Geo Sourass ( Soros )Up Yours ! Posted by: blackhawk at November 04, 2004 Being from Canada I do worry about the state of affairs south of the border. I've met many americans, some fit the profile that the world sees them as (say no more) and then there are those that are actually intelligent and concerned for their country.
-Most money you spend in your country is leaving the country to those jobs that are manufacturing almost everything you buy. There is a select few that keep that money but it's only that few rather than many americans who could have it. And paying taxes...well whatever they do have to pay, those overseas bank accounts tend to give a little loophole for not paying taxes period -You get old, do you plan on retiring? How? Social security will be worse for many years to come and when you can't retire because of living expenses just remember if the youth are having trouble finding jobs how will an old coot retain a job at 75? -You have children, and there's not going to be much left for them or their own children. water/land/jobs. You realize the current admin is essentially living the motto "take what you can because it may not be there tomorrow" We're only seeing the beginning of that effect and the natural human instinct is to do nothing until it's too late it seems (lemmings anyone?). We may not see it now, but what will our children see...they're going to be pissed! -You've built a good reputation in the last 200 years, and in a matter of 8 years that reputation will go from someone to look up to, to YIKES! Don't trust these assholes. I also have a feeling that it would take longer to overcome a bad rep, I would assume as the generations go by with examples left behind that the US's reputation will still be shitty in 600 years. Who in america wants to live with that? Luckily It may not have to come to that though, it's just a matter of taking initative on making the US the respected country it was founded to be. Good Luck people! Make your country what it should be! *I'll refrain from using the "B" word, it gets both sides a little hot headed. If you people had your way saddam would still be killing people and charging there family for the bullets used and there would still be rape rooms. I wish you moore lovers would just go get raped and killed i hate you communist bastards and yes mr. moore is a registered communist Posted by: Eric at January 09, 2005First off "america has freed lots of people in the last 200 years" america revolutionised slavery.... america is the reason their is 3rd world countries, america does not do much at all to "free people" unless it somehow benefits them.
The iraqi people had jobs, they had basic services, food, water, electricity, now the unemployment rate stands at about 95% even the most basic of services is limited to the fortunate few, security is more unstable than it has ever been under saddams rule, sure he was evil, but the effect the US led war has had on iraq is even more evil. Iraq also had never outright attacked americans, or american people, before the war how often did you hear of iraqi terrorists? this war and american policies in iraq and the broader arab regions will spawn thousands more Usama Bin Ladins. Not to mention the fact the US military uses weapons that are banned, mustard gas... napalm.. uranium costed amunition... (all used in fulluja Nov - 2004 ) Are those weapons they are using not the foundation of why they attacked iraq in the first place? The reason terrorism exists on the scale it does is because of american foreign policy. Posted by: Lucas at March 11, 2005That person who said French are worse than Americans couldn't be more wrong (im not french by the way). Americans are so fucking concerned with themselves they couldnt care less about what's going on in the rest of the world. American's in general ARE stupid, Michael Moore included, and if you believe his crap then I feel sorry for you. Did you know only 20% of Americans own a passport? Point made. Posted by: Julia at May 13, 2005Well, I don't know any Canadians who walk around embarrassed to be Canadian. Ask any American world traveller this ... "Do you admit and/or broadcast the fact you are American when abroad?" Of course they don't ... who the hell would admit that they were american unless you're in your backyard. Moore has it right ... I'm 50% american (mother) and wish to God that my blood wasn't tainted by America. I may be 50% american by birth (dual citizenship) but I walk around saying I'm 100% Canadian. What is amazing is American lack of knowledge ... about anything really, I've lived in a bordertown all my life and the stupidest people I've ever met of course are from South of our border. Y'all are pretty stupid ... and the 'Big ol' world knows 'bout it. Posted by: Mark at June 17, 2005i would just like the CANADIAN jody stewart to stop saying "WE" when she is talking about Americans. You are not an American. You are a Canadian. As for the media, our media is brutal on our country. Our own media is brewing up shit about Gitmo and other bogus claims. As for Mark. We, Americans, are unhappy that you are 50% American. You are the kind of person that we don't want to come into our country but yet you'll come over. America is the big distinguished brother and Canada is the little redheaded step-child. You will always be jealous of us, our economy, our military power, and well hell our sports. Don't you think its abooooooot time you stop crying, aye? Posted by: i love W. at July 12, 2005I find it rather odd that some of the people who posted here have probably never even visited the USA. It's like those people who bash Harry Potter before they read it. How can you talk about people you've never met? And even if you have met them, how can you make a judgment about 300 million people when you've only met a handful? I do find it disheartening to know that the world thinks we're all idiots over here in America. Here's a hint for ya, though, we're not. Maybe we have alot of village idiots, but here's another hint: you do, too. American foreign policy is lacking in alot of areas, but let me add this: at least we have a foreign policy. Posted by: 1776 at July 23, 2005I'm sorry guys, but as someone who's lived in France, England, the USA, and Italy, in my experience Americans are the dumbest people by a long shot. You can see this stupidity in all sorts of American habits, from eating food that kills you, to driving the most inefficient vehicle you can afford (the SUV) to electing leaders who are simply not up to the job (Jimmy Carter, Ronald Regan - 2nd term, and Dubya come instantly to mind). On the plus side, you Americans are never given credit for your kindness, your generosity, and sweetly innocent ignorance - if you knew or bothered to learn what your government does in their name you'd be horrified, and the question "why do they hate us so much?!?" wouldn't arise... God bless you all, even though the rest of the world knows God doesn't exist, and Dubya is hallucinating if he thinks God is speaking to him at evening prayers in Abe's bedroom.
