July 03, 2004A&E > Mountain StageWatching "Mountain Stage" on PBS. Asleep at the Wheel was first up, and as always that band is simply amazing. They sound better on stage than most bands sound in the studio. Next up was local favs Robinella and the CC String (Robinella has a different look) and then Steve Forbert. Asleep at the Wheel performed "Don't Fence Me In." ("Give me land/Lots of Land/Under starry skies above/Don't fence me in.") Do you know who wrote that song? I was amazed. Answer below. Answer: Cole Porter. Odd. Odder still, the first person to record it was Bing Crosby. I think of "Don't Fence Me In" as a cowboy song, and those two guys are about as far removed from cowboys as you can get. Posted by lesjonesComments
