News > Charley

About 800,000 people are without power in Florida. 100.3 The River is collecting relief materials for victims of Charley at West Town Mall and Knoxville Center. The Red Cross is accepting donations via phone (800-HELP-NOW) and the Web.

Bigwig wonders why mobile homes are allowed in hurricane areas. That is odd.

When we were in Florida in May we visited Melissa's cousin Lisa in Edgewater, which is on the Atlantic side. Lisa's husband was telling me about the Edgewater building codes. The windows are required to have either permanent shutters, or hurricane bolts for quick attachment of shutters. When not in use, the bolts are covered with decorative caps so they're hardly noticeable. The walls of their house were poured concrete. Those building codes make sense, but then mobile homes seem like a major loophole, unless all of the mobile homes were pre-code and just grandfathered in.

Don't know what materials WOKI is collecting, but relief workers call this the "second disaster". They get so much unusable stuff, particularly used clothing and shoes, that they spending a lot of time trying to sort it and finding a way/place to store it and then end up burning a lot of it. Better to give money!
