News > Lasers and Pilots

Airplanes have recently been targeted with lasers, though there's some question as to whether the lasers were being aimed at the pilots' eyes, or whether the lasers were measuring distances to the planes for targeting purposes.

Clayton Cramer has a post up speculating about the specifics. He uses lasers to turn off street lights that are interfering with his astronomical observations, so he has some experience using and aiming lasers. Because of energy, distance, and aiming considerations, he doesn't think the people involved were using ordinary laser pointers, nor does he think they accidentally or casually targeted the pilots.
