January 27, 2005Guns > Gun Links #31It's been a busy week, so it's going to be a short set of links this time around. Zendo Deb notes that the gun-free utopia of England has highest crime rate among top 20 nations. Smith &Wesson Forum thread on Oswald's .38. As a JFK buff, I knew that Oswald killed officer Tippet with an S&W revolver that had been re-bored from .38 S&W to .38 Special, and that consequently the FBI couldn't do ballistics on the gun. This thread explains why, and some commenters note that they owned or fired similarly re-bored S&W revolvers during that era. I had no idea the conversion was so common. Jeff Soyer has the weekly check on the bias. Discussion of shooting while pregnant. Melissa and I decided she definitely shouldn't shoot while pregnant (which was no great loss, since she had only been shooting once before that). Risk factors include the noise and lead exposure. Many ranges caution against it. Keeping the Eternal Flame WarsWhich is better to train with, a 22 Revolver or 22 Semiauto? Roughest, toughest, most durable rifle ever built? Interesting discussion of the failings of early cartridge rifles and cartridge designs. AR or AK? SayUncle commentor Rick DeMent notes, "Now you see I thought you were trying to decide between Arizona and Arkansas for a vacation." How Guns Work and Gun Pic of the WeekWadcutter is explaining semi-automatic operating systems. I'm planning an update of my blogroll, and Wadcutter is definitely going on the blogroll. For a fantastic Flash animation of the inner workings of a 1911, see this STI page. Hint: use the grid in the lower left to selectively make parts of the gun invisible or transparent. Via Kim du Toit. Finally, I like this nifty animated GIF from donttouchme.com of a semi-automatic pistol cycling. ![]() Posted by lesjones SayUncle linked with Les has more Alphecca linked with Weekly Check on the Bias... Thats an interesting post on 38 S&W. I have a old box of Winchester .38 S&W that we found in the attic of my parents house. My father thinks it belonged to a since deceased uncle, but isn't real sure. We've never been able to actually find a .38 S&W barrelled gun, though from what I've found on the internet - its most likely a break top revolver. Posted by: countertop at January 27, 2005Lead is definitely an issue at indoor ranges, and unborn children can hear - and so can have their hearing damaged. Lead can also be an issue for young kids at indoor ranges. Lead is really bad for growning neverous systems. Posted by: Zendo Deb at January 27, 2005Post a comment
