January 31, 2005Blogging > Instapundit Finally Throws Down on Oliver WillisI've been amazed at how patient Instapundit has been with Oliver Willis, despite all of the small, snitty things Willis has said. He's even kept him in his blogroll all these years. Now it looks like Glenn finally had enough: MONKEYS WILL PAY TO SEE MONKEY PORN: And they're into "celebrity gossip," too:Posted by lesjonesThe rhesus macaque monkeys also splurged on photos of top-dog counterparts, the high-ranking primates. . . . The scientists actually had to pay these guys, in the form of extra juice, to get them to look at images of lower-ranking monkeys. Comments
Well, that seems pretty f***ing racist. But maybe I'm oversensitive. Posted by: skb at January 31, 2005Uh, because the word "monkey" was involved in a story involving actual, you know, monkeys? FWIW, the word monkey is not necessarily code for blacks. He's calling Oliver and Max low-ranking monkeys. I don't even know who Max is. Is Max black? And to make this analogy work, Glenn Reynolds is also putting himself in the role of being a monkey. Honestly, trying to pin a charge of rasicm on Reynolds is pretty far out there. Posted by: Les Jones at January 31, 2005Well, I think the fact that you are a little defensive about it pretty much says all that needs to be said. Posted by: skb at January 31, 2005Nope, it just means I've seen the "conservatives use the word 'monkeys' as code" stuff before. Didn't make sense then, didn't make sense now. If Max turns out to be a white guy, would you agree that the term wasn't used racially? Posted by: Les Jones at January 31, 2005Max is Jewish. And white. But he has a pretty good sense about these sorts of things. There's a reason they are considerd "code". Posted by: skb at January 31, 2005So I guess "monkey" now means "black and/or Jewish"? So, what, Glenn Reynolds is now racist and anti-semitic? Yeah, that's why he's so down on Israel. Oh, wait, he isn't. Posted by: Les Jones at January 31, 2005OK, let me try to spell out for you real slow like. Try to follow along. Respected Jewish economists notwithstanding, what conceivable connection is there between the article Reynolds linked to and Oliver Willis? If Someone doesn't like what someone else is saying about them on their blog, why not just say "O-Dub says X about me and he is wrong because of Y." Why the need for the cleverly "coded" references? And why the need for another totally unrelated and irrelevant blog to bring attention to the whole unfortunate episode? Oh, wait. Maybe Oliver has gold teeth and bling bling. Or maybe the problem is that he doesn't. It's getting harder and harder to sort it all out. Like I said, what's been said pretty much says all that needs to be said. Posted by: skb at January 31, 2005Uhh, on reflection, never mind. I'm probably off base. I tend to read too much into things sometimes. You're right. Nice smackdown by Reynolds. Posted by: skb at January 31, 2005Good save. Posted by: Les Jones at January 31, 2005Wow. I mean, wow. This is why I don't have a blog, Les. Posted by: Steve K. at February 01, 2005Post a comment
