Blogging > Blogging Libel Insurance, and a Reason to Not Have Ads or Tipjars
Law professor and blogger Eugene Volokh says that your homeowner's insurance policy may offer protection against libel suits, though that protection may be compromised in some states if you make any money from your blog (such as ads or tipjars). It's one reason I don't have a tipjar or run any ads. (And it's why I'm on Blogspot, and use Photobucket and Haloscan.) I quote media pieces in whole quite often, and use copyrighted photographs. As far as I'm concerned, I'm practicing "fair use" - but fair use is easier defended if I can claim that I'm not making any profit of any kind off of that use.
