February 23, 2005Politics > 2004 Election Fraud, Part 2An Ohio man has plead guilty to creating phony voter registrations. Via Powerline. The whole voter registration business is open to abuses. Last yearthere were a group of people at one of the Sundown in the City concerts helping people to register to vote. That seems helpful, but how could you be sure they intended to turn in the cards? A group of Republicans could go to an event like that where lots of Democrats were present and then let them think they were registered. Likewise for Democrats at a Republican-packed event like a gun show. The only reason the genius in Ohio was caught was because he filled out his registration cards with names like Mary Poppins and Brett Favre. (He was being paid by the number of voter registration cards he completed.) A barely-competent person would probably never be caught. Posted by lesjonesComments
There's this, too: Bully for him. And I'm not being sarcastic. This is a good thing, even if it's just a mild scolding. The real credit, though, should probably go to Condolezza Rice (at least the statement regarding Russia. Who knows where the Togo stuff came from). I suspect she was the one who was primarily responsible for pushing Reagan to reconsider his relationship with Gorbechev, and during the Bush 41 administration, she did what she could to try and prevent Yeltsin from getting too much power. She was a spineless yes-man during the lead up to the Iraq war, but she has a lot of sense and potentially could be a very successful SoS if she can find the nerve to stand up to the Cheney/Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz axis. What I'd like to see is some easing of sanctions on Cuba, and far more extensive cultural contacts with them. The writing is on the wall for Castro's regime, but if we had a sensible policy towards Cuba, we could speed things up dramatically and make the transition much less unpleasant. But that doesn't seem very likely, unfortunately. And the neocons still seem to be calling the shots in the Middle East, so I'm not terribly optimistic about us applying pressure in a productive way with regard to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. But who knows, maybe they'll surprise me. Oh, and yeah, I used the word "neocon". That's because I hate Jews. Posted by: Steve K. at February 23, 2005Uh...that should obviously have gone with the post below. Posted by: Steve K. at February 23, 2005The UT College Republicans did just what you described in 1992. They went door-to-door registering voters, but threw out the form if they thought the person was a Democrat. The Election Commission got so many complaints, they held a special after-the-deadline registration session. Tim Burchett was one of the door-knockers. Those purple fingers in Iraq are a great idea. Not only would they prevent multiple voting, you could also tell which of your friends are lazy citizens.
