March 15, 2005Science > Krauthammer on Research CloningCharles Krauthammer notes a subtle softening of Bush's stance on embryonic stem cell research. I didn't realize it, but Krauthammer is on the president's councial on bioethics. He endorses the use of unimplanted embryos originally intended for implantation, but opposes the creation of embryos for research purposes. I'm not sure I agree with that second part, but it certainly does serve as a clear ethical bright line, and I'm pretty sure I'd disagree with a lot of the alternatives that go past that line. Krauthammer's a medico, isn't he? Psychiatrist, I believe. Posted by: Thibodeaux at March 14, 2005Yep, psychiatrist. Published in research journals, even. Smart guy. Posted by: Les Jones at March 14, 2005Except for that "we need to disarm the citizenry" thing. Posted by: Thibodeaux at March 15, 2005It is odd that he's so in favor of gun control. Posted by: Les Jones at March 15, 2005I'm still trying to get a clear picture of Krauthammer's position. I read a couple of examples of the "disarm the citenzenry" quote, but I can't find the original article. It sounds a lot to me like he was talking about the sneaky nature of the law, and not an endorsement of disarming people. Until I can read the whole thing though, it is impossible to say. In 2002 he talked about how gun control laws didn't do much to fight terror, stating - "Let me assure you of one thing: Terrorists will find guns whether they’re legal or not. It will make no difference. Al-Qaeda doesn’t observe gun laws." That's not a ringing endorsement of gun ownership, but presuming he's for gun control (as some state) then it at least makes his position more nuanced. He isn't falling for wacky ideas that assume criminals and terrorists will follow the law. Later this evening I'm going to look up more on this. I have a lot of respect for his writings, so I'm very curious to know his position. Posted by: Chris Range at March 15, 2005I'd be curious to see what you find. Krauthammer never seems to talk about gun control in his column. Posted by: Les Jones at March 15, 2005reading the gun control essay from the latter 90's. He is pro gun-control, but says both political sides are "blowing smoke." He says the assault weapons ban is just symbolic and that no one will ever give up their guns in this country until liberals in the judicial branch are harsher on criminal penalties.
