Comic Books > R. Crumb

mystic3.jpgThe Guardian has a five-part series on comic artist R. Crumb. Fantastic stuff.

If you're looking for a movie to rent this weekend, find a copy of the Terry Zwigoff documentary Crumb. If you've ever thought there couldn't be a family crazier than yours, this movie will prove you wrong.

I enjoyed the Crumb documentary a good deal. It put my wife to sleep though. The movie and the man are definitely matters of subjective interest. For a long time I didn't know who had done the Mr. Natural cartoons. A Mr. Natural poster hung on my cousin's apartment wall throughout the 70s. It was one of those little details that became fixed in my mind, related to a certain time and feeling.

Finally a couple years ago I asked Tom Payne (a mutual friend of Les and I) if he knew who had done the cartoon. He can remember the era a little better than me (heh heh) so he clued me in.

At some point I bet one of those little cartoon diaries he keeps will wind up in the Smithsonian.

In the '70s in the Blount County area someone was selling bootleg eight tracks. Instead of using the original cover art (which I guess was too hard to copy in the pre-PC era) they used R. Crumb stuff like the Freak Brothers for the covers.
