I just renewed the lesjones.com domain all the way out to the futuristic year 2010.
Don't take chances with your domain names. Renew for the longest period possible so you're less likely to have problems like this.

If a domain has much traffic it all and doesn't get renewed there's a fair chance it will get snapped up by a domain name collector who will park advertising on it.
Steve K and I know a guy who does that sort of thing. He also has someone who analyzes DNS requests to see what domains people are trying to access that don't exist, then he registers them.
