E-commerce > CitiGroup Loses Personal Data for 3.9 Million Customers
CitiGroup can't account for the personal data of 3.9 million customers. This wasn't a hack or break-in, though. A box of backup tapes containing the data went missing in transit.
Years ago at U.S. Internet Reed Wade insisted that a Web form we used PGP-encrypt credit card data for the express purpose of protecting it from end to end, including the copy on backup tapes. Smart guy. According to the NY Times story the CitiGroup data was not encrypted.
