Quotes > Freedom of Speech

"Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from criticism."
 -- Captain Ed

Now why didn't I think of that pithy phrase? A standard response to criticism these days is to claim that the other side is suppressing your right to free speech. Of course I have a right to free speech, and of course your right to free speech includes the right to criticize my speech. But that's wordy and convoluted, while "Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from criticism" is concise and precise.

I've said before that with freedom of speech also comes the obligation to be occasionally offended. Not as catchy, though.
