Last night Katie said "apple." Melissa was feeding her applesauce and saying "Do you know what applesauce is? It's made from mushed-up apples" and Katie started making "app-el" sounds. Sometimes it was easy for her, and sometimes she really had to try hard to make the sound, which makes me think she was conciously trying to say it. She's said da-da and ma-ma before, but apple is her first real word.
