Science > Springbrook Park Mushrooms

We took a family walk at Springbrook tonight and founds tons of mushrooms. I'm a little rusty now, but I used to hunt edible mushrooms. I need to look up Gwenn Evans one of these days.

All picture processing was done in Google's free Picasa, which I'm really starting to like.

Used to hunt edible ones too. A buddy in college got me started - he was a mycology major and since we both shared a love of the grateful dead we hit it off pretty quickly.

I used to find all sorts of great ones - morels, ink caps, etc - in my yard in Vermont but haven't looked in years.

It is something you need to be very careful about though, I know a guy who lost his whole family to misidentifed mushrooms. Only reason he didn't eat them as well was that he was sick and ended up skipping dinner that night.

Wowzers. That's scary stuff. That guy must have had one hellishly guilty conscience.

Back when I was doing it I was pretty careful and only ate things that I was sure of, but I'd be pretty hesitant to do it anymore outside of some very obvious species. It isn't the sort of hobby you can engage in casually.

Yeah, don't know about the guilty conscience but he became sort of strange, has run through a few wives since it happened (though he was a bit of a player beforehand, so I don't know if its related or not).

Last I heard, he was working in the food industry for a major grocery chain. Haven't seen him in years, but still speak with others who are in contact with him regularly.
