July 24, 2005A&E > Generation Repeat Goes to the MoviesThis really is generation repeat. That picture is from Bedford, New Hampshire, but we're going to a theater this afternoon in Maryville, Tennessee and six out of 12 screens are showing remakes. It would be eight if I counted Batman Begins and The Fantastic Four as remakes (I couldn't decide). It would be nine if The Dukes of Hazard were playing here. I can't remember there ever being this many remakes. Posted by lesjonesComments
I didn't even notice that it had gotten this bad! Holy crap! Posted by: Matt Groom at July 24, 2005You know whats worse? There isnt one of them that is as good as the original. Whats the sense of doing it again if youre not going to do it right? Flight of the Phoenix? With the exception of the first 4 minutes and the Johnny Cash song, its was complete waste of time, the director missed the whole point of the movie. rather than a few bedouin, this director decided to insert motorcycle riding machine gun wielding smugglers. Phony? sure it was. The audience knows phony when it sees it. And Whats the sense of making "the bad news bears" if you cant take your kids to see it? Walter Matthau was a lush but he wasnt a degenerate. If they remade Jaws today, it would have 300 perfectly rendered CGI Sharks and you would get to see Captain Quint go all the way down the sharks throat from the Captains perspective, but it wouldnt scare you. Everything is run through a focus group, everything is safe, as a result, everything sucks. Is it any wonder that Netflix is booming while movie theatres are dying on the vine? that picuture on your post makes is perfectly clear why the movie industry is dead. I wouldn't show my kids the original Bad News Bears, either. Don't forget Star Wars is out, too. Posted by: Barry at July 25, 2005That's the perfect example of a remake that is equivalent to a kick in the balls of every original fan. The last real Star Wars movie was released in 1983. I'm 23, and even I know that. If I had kids, I wouldn't allow them to see episodes 1-3 until they were old enough to appreciate that they are bullshit. Ditto for the Ewoks movies. Remakes suck!
