East Tennessee > Grainger County Tomato Festival / Civil War Re-enactment

Melissa and her mom went to the Grainger County Tomato Festival in Rutledge today. Grainger County is adjacent to Knox county, and their tomatoes are pretty popular around here.

The other thing I always remember about Grainger County is that it's pretty sparsely populated as places east of the Mississippi go. According to NationMaster the population density is 74 people per square mile. Even Knox County is 10 times as dense.

Melissa took these photos, so credit goes to her. I noticed there weren't any pictures of tomatoes, but that's just because they didn't strike her fancy. She said there were lots of tomatoes and tomato products and/or events on hand. That's good. Starke and Amanda went to the Cosby Ramp Festival a few months ago, and there was like one guy selling ramps. Like Bart Simpson said about the Grammar Rodeo, "They forgot that it was supposed to be about the grammar."

Most of the pictures were of the Civil War re-enactors. So Jay took his punk rock cousin Armando to a Grateful Dead show in Atlanta one time. Armando's reaction to the Deadheads was "My God. These people are like Civil War re-enactors."

Speaking of tomatoes and the Civil War...
Richmond's version of Grainger Co is Hanover Co. One of my friend's grandmother told him that "the blood of the Yankee soldiers" was what made the tomatoes there so good.
