November 08, 2005East Tennessee > Campbell County School ShootingMichael Silence rounds up coverage of the shooting today at Campbell County Comprehensive High School. The assistant principal is dead, and the principal and another faculty member were seriously injured. The student is in custody. Frank Stossel, the news director at WQLA-FM in LaFollette, has a local take on the story. The suspect is 15-year old Kenny Bartley. He is a remedial student and somehow got what is now believed to be a .22-caliber pistol onto school grounds. We had callers report to us that Bartley was suspected of carrying a gun, that there were other students who knew he was armed and said nothing. and that it wasn't until someone at the security booth along the entrance driveway got suspicious and called the principal. Bartley was led to an office in which Principal Gary Seales was to deal with the issue. Whether or not the other two administrators were in the office at that point is still unclear. Bartley and his father had both been in trouble with the law. If Bartley was suspected of having a gun it would have been prudent to have an armed guard or police officer in the office when he was called in. I'm also in favor of qualified faculty members voluntarily going armed in schools. That was the Israeli answer to terrorist attacks on schools. If a few of these shooters were stopped in their tracks, this school shooting craze would likely come to an abrupt end. Posted by lesjones | TrackBackClassical Values linked with just shut up! Also don't forget that today a principal in Fayetteville, TN was beaten to a bloody pulp in his own office by two masked men. And TSU held a memorial today for a delivery driver robbed and killed on campus. I know what the solution is. Ban guns on campus! Oh wait, we already do... Terrible. Just terrible. And infuriating. Posted by: Paul Simer at November 08, 2005Mr.Bruce was a great princpal. He was the type that would actually talk to you like you were a person. He listened and tried to help. He was my princpal in JR. HIGH. I moved before he came to the high school. He will be missed by all. Posted by: unknown at November 12, 2005i dont think kenny bartley should be triled as an adult! Posted by: at November 17, 2005Mr. bruce was one of the very special people we had at the high school and he will be misse This whole idea about trialing Kenny Bartley as an adult is absolutely absurd. I didn't know him but he seems like he was a nice guy,who just needed some anger management or something. He may have had problems at home or something. It really upsets me that everyone just automatically hates him when they don't even know what his story is behind this mistake! Posted by: at November 18, 2005i think the little basterd needs to rot in that fuckin cell for what he did...... Posted by: unknown at December 08, 2005I also think that he should be tried as an adult. For what he did he has caused alot of hurt in Campbell Co. And needs to pay the price Posted by: unknown at December 08, 2005I NEW MR. BRUCE AND WENT TO SCHOOL AT CCCHS, I WAS CLASS OF 2000 LOOKING BACK ON MY TIME THERE SOME OF MY BEST MEMORIES WERE OF HIM KIDDING AROUND W/ME AND SHARING A LAUGH HE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED AND THE PERSON THAT DID THIS TO HIM SHOULD HAVE HIS LIFE TAKEN AWAY SAME AS HE DID TO MR BRUCE. Posted by: at September 28, 2006Kenneth Bartley was not a remedial student. He is a very bright boy. Students told on him for having the gun. That is how the principle found out. He planned to sell the gun for drugs after school and had no intention of shooting anyone. The security booth had nothing to do with informing anyone about Kenneth having a gun. The principle, Seale, did not even know that Kenneth was suspected of having a gun until he arrived at the main office where Kenneth had been patiently waiting in Pierce's small office for 20 minutes calmly talking with Pierce. The resource officer that had Kenneth removed from class did not search him for the weapon, even though she knew that he was suspected of having a gun on him. She led him through the corridor, putting ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF at risk. THIS IS CALLED NEGLIGENCE!!!
