Johnia Berry > Steve Huff Series on Johnia Berry Murder

warrenhouselabeled.jpgNoted crime blogger Steve Huff has written a three part series on Johnia Berry's murder.

A Knoxville Mystery, Part 1
A Knoxville Mystery, Part 2
A Knoxville Mystery, Part 3

I found part 2 especially interesting. Huff dug through online ratings for the apartments where Johnia was killed. Several ratings for the time preceding Johnia's death noted security problems and burglaries. This one was perhaps the most disturbing, since it supports the theory that someone simply walked up the back steps of Johnia's third floor apartment:

SAFETY ALERT: Shared balconies mean that anyone can walk up to your back door and peer in. This happened MANY times. People just come up and stand on your balcony because they are open to the public. THIS SUCKS...

SAFETY ALERT: Warren (aka Crack) House next door. Big problem. Cops every night. Granted, BP can't pick who lives next door. But they could provide roaming security officers at night to prevent cars being broken into and vandalism on their own property from the hoods next door.

Part three contains original photography. Huff's friend, Karns resident Anthony Veach, contributed photos of Brendon Park (where Johnia and her roommate lived) and Warren House apartments (when Johnia's roommate was stabbed he ran out the front door and directly across Rhodora Road to Warren House). While Brendon Park is nice Warren House isn't. Until you visit Warren House or see pictures you can't appreciate how run down it is or why it's nicknamed the Crack House. Many thanks to Huff and Veach for their work, and for permission to use the photos.

I don't live too far away from Brendon Park.I drove through the apartment complex recently and the balconies seem rather low to the ground which would allow someone to hoist himself up from the ground one would think.I didn't know which apartment had been hers and was too squeemish to ask.I didn't want people to think I'm a ghoul. I wrote quit a bit about Johnia before I was cast out of WATE.COM by the conservative forum manager.
The Sheriff's Department seems to be having a lot of trouble solving the case. They allegedly have told the family Johnia's murder has something to do with her time in Johnson City/ETSU but that's all. If that's true it means someone was stalking her and this was a planned murder and not simply a burglary gone wrong.
It has been alleged the Sheriff's Department turned down an offer from America's Most Wanted to help.If so I wonder why.If the case was on AMW you would think more people would see the composite sketch and someone might recognize the man.
Supposedly Johnia's family has met Nancy Grace and a show was taped to be broadcast on her CNN program.I don't get to see CNN very often so I don't know if that show featuring Johnia's parents has ever been broadcast.
In other murder cases the victim's family has handed out fliers of the composite sketch and even received help from outdoor advertisers. The advertisers put up a picture of the sketch on an advertisement visible from the road or highway. Those steps helped police to catch the killers in at least two instances that AMW mentioned in one of their email bullitins I regularly receive and I wonder why the billboard that is up has her picture and not that of the killers.
I hope the police are successful in catching the murderer soon.

A few more comments. There appears to be an underclass of drug users in this town. I suspect they are all over this town and not just in shabby apartment complexes like Warren House. My next door neighbor's new SUV was broken into by someone I suspect was an addict and several items were stolen. If we assume for a moment that an addict was responsible for Johnia's death then why did she let him into her apartment ? If she knew him then he wasn't a stranger .He most certainly wasn't just someone she had seen at the mall. Nor would he have been someone just asking her if "those were her CDs". It simply doesn't make sense that at that hour a young woman would let a complete stranger into her apartment no matter what he told her. So obviously there are pieces of the puzzle that are missing.

The CNN Nancy Grace show featuring Johnia's parents plus the Sheriff was shown recently. Here is an addy from websleuth's with some of the details.

"I drove through the apartment complex recently and the balconies seem rather low to the ground which would allow someone to hoist himself up from the ground one would think."

No hoisting necessary. There are steps leading from the ground all the way to the top floor.

You're right that how the person got in and what they were doing there are the key questions.

Given how Sheriff Hutchison adores being on TV, his decision to turn down AMW is strange. I hope it means they have a suspect or suspects under surveillance and are waiting for him to slip up.

I have to tell you I lived in Warren House. Not everyone there is a drug dealer, etc. In fact, I worked in law enforcement while residing there. This tragic situation is just a prime example of the fact that paying more for your apartment doesn't mean you are anymore safer.
