Tech > A Solution for Symantec's Norton Internet Security and Gmail's "Arrgh! The page has been corrupted. If you are running security or firewall software, you may have to disable it" Error

(Apologies for the obnoxiously long title. I'm trying to make this post friendly to search engine users who are searching for a solution to this problem.)

I've occasionally gotten the following error in Gmail: "Arrgh! The page has been corrupted. If you are running security or firewall software, you may have to disable it." That error prevents me from seeing all or part of the email message.

The error includes a link to a suggestion to contact Symantec, the company that makes Norton Internet Security, which I use on my home laptop. Symantec's support area didn't have any information about the problem, so I experimented on my own. It turns out that Norton Internet Security's ad blocking feature was the cause of the problem. If it's turned on I get the error. If it's turned off I don't.

To fix the problem:

1. Go to Start -> Programs -> Norton Internet Security -> Norton Internet Security.
2. Select "Ad Blocking."
3. Click the yellow Configure button.
4. Uncheck "Turn on Ad Blocking."
5. Click OK to save changes.

Thanks much for this tip. I wonder why Norton can't put the simple solution on their web pages.

Thanks a lot Les (Jones) for your post. This problem has bothered me for years while Gmail's own help page only complicates it further.

I believe lots more people are still facing this problem and not properly fixed.

You are great man.

Yeah, ditto, great stuff. In vain I searched for help from Symantec and Google. Les Jones, you're the man!

Works great, thanks for the tip!

Thanks!!!! I don't think Norton should fix this, *Google* should have this info. They are getting arrogant and beginning to slip in keeping their eye on what's best for their customers. Suggesting that people should turn off the firewall altogether is irresponsible.

You can keep ad blocking enabled by going into the advanced section and setting a permit '/' option for mail.google.com. I presume that there is a better string than '/' to use, but I haven't played around with it enough to find out.
