Ronnie Sellers ("The Torso of 1977 was not Paul Hurst") responded in comments on this post. (I haven't confirmed it's him, but I'm reasonably sure it is.) Something I didn't quite get until his comments: he thinks Hurst was in on the (alleged) conspiracy.

. When we get back to Maryville, Sunny Hurst didn't talk to me for a whole year. He was the one that did all the training on me. His dad, Paul, had me sparring with only beginners for the next two and a half years until I finally quit. Sunny also pinched a nerve in my back between my shoulder blades, I'm sure on purpose to hurt my ability to continue boxing. None of what happened made sense until I found out the torso was not Paul Hurst.

Sunny played along with everyone knowing the torso wasn't his dad and when everything came to a stand still, he let it die down. Sunny was in on this conspiracy from the beginning. He was part of it. These are my assumptions. If you had been there when I stomped a mudhole in Leonard's ass, you would understand why Leonard was willing to pay Sunny and Paul to get rid of me.

For the record, I'm not taking sides in this, and as a general rule I don't believe in complicated conspiracies for the simple reason that people aren't very good at keeping secrets.

Mr. Jones, Apparently you misunderstand the level of conspiracy involved. This is the level of conspiracy that will, get your ass killed, if you have loose lips. In 1998, I got Darrell DeBusk with NBC WBIR Channel 10 News in Knoxville convinced that there was a story behind this torso. Darrell DeBusk was Channel 10 News assignment director. He was investigating the torso murder and two months into his investigation Sunny Hurst's wife was kidnapped, rapped and stabbed. The man even stomped her so hard, her gall bladder ruptured and had to be romoved. That was the end of Darrell DeBusk's efforts, to help me. Thinking that the mob world doesn't exist is like thinking that the devil doesn't exist. And people,connected to it,can be respected members of society. People keep their mouth's shut because it isn't healthy to talk about the devil. Or do you not believe people do things like that anymore? I think you would keep a secret like that, if talking meant death. Don't play me like a fool, Sir. I'm not some nut that just fell off the tree. I'm for real and I don't make shit up to make myself feel like a man. I was knocking out grown men when I was seventeen. I didn't dream my fight with Leonard and what I did to him and him to me. And yes, THE MOB HAS INTEREST IN BOXING, EVEN IN THE GOLDEN GLOVES, MAINLY DON KING. BUT NOT ONLY DON KING

I don't understand the whole story. You could tell the whole thing. I see the man with the sign out in town alot and just wanted to know the meaning of it.
